Republican presidential hopeful Mitt Romney said on Tuesday that he will uphold an executive order signed by Barack Obama allowing illegal immigrant youth to stay in the U.S. legally.
?The people who have received the special visa that the president has put in place, which is a two-year visa, should expect that the visa would continue to be valid. I?m not going to take something that they?ve purchased,? Romney told the Denver Post. ?Before those visas have expired we will have the full immigration reform plan that I?ve proposed.?
The executive order signed by President Obama last June gives legal status to children of illegal immigrants who obtain higher education or join the military. It also mirrors the DREAM Act, which has been in a years-long stalemate in Congress. The move has been seen by many as a highly political one to court Hispanic voters in the run-up to the election.
Romney, who trails the president by as much as 30 points among Hispanics, has softened his stance on illegal immigration even further in an effort to court their vote.
For example, during the Republican primary, Romney said he supported self-deportation, making laws so stringent that illegals go back home on their own. He has not used the term since clinching the Republican nomination. The candidate now says he supports bolstering legal immigration, especially for highly-skilled workers, and securing the border.
Romney trails Obama by as much as 30 points among Hispanic voters.
The New York Times reports Colorado Hispanics responded warmly to Romney?s new stance, although some activists raised questions on whether or not he would continue the program or simply honor those obligations to people who have already signed up.
Romney did not give details on what ?full immigration reform plan? would be put into place, should he win the presidency in November.
?I actually will propose a piece of legislation which will reform our immigration system to improve legal immigration so people don?t have to hire lawyers to figure out how to get here legally,? Romney said. ?The president promised in his first year, his highest priority, that he would reform immigration and he didn?t. And I will.?
Obama campaign spokeswoman Jen Psaki told CBS News that Romney?s new stance on illegal immigration ?raised more questions about what exactly is the policy [he] would support.?
?It?s not really showing a huge amount of courage to give a confusing answer on an issue that?s been around for more than 100 days,? she said, noting that President Obama signed the executive order in that time frame.
