NHL, players' union open labor negotiations with meeting

NEW YORK - The NHL and the players' union opened negotiations on a new labor deal Monday by meeting for about 2 1-2 hours.

Commissioner Gary Bettman and Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly met with NHLPA Executive Director Donald Fehr, union special counsel Steve Fehr and several player reps at the league's Manhattan offices.

"Members of our League Office staff and several of our owners met today with the NHLPA and various members of the players' negotiating committee at the League Office in New York," Daly said in a statement released after the meetings. "The meeting was very cordial and we hope it was constructive.

"Before breaking, the parties discussed follow-up steps and confirmed plans for future meetings. We have nothing further to report at this time."

Washington Capitals owner Ted Leonsis declined to comment as he left the building and hopped into a waiting car.

"Following today's meeting, we will review the NHL's initial presentation with the Players' committee before reconvening for further talks later next week." Donald Fehr said.

Among the players in attendance were Scott Hartnell of the Flyers, Rick DiPietro of the Islanders and George Parros of the Anaheim Ducks, Chris Campoli of the Canadiens, Dan Winnik of the Sharks, Brandon Dubinsky of the Rangers, Brad Boyes of the Sabres, Ron Hainsey of the Jets.

This was the first formal talks between the two sides. They come after the NHLPA's executive board held a three-day meeting in Chicago earlier this week.

The collective bargaining agreement expires Sept. 15. There is fear the league could be heading toward another lockout.

The owners locked out the players in 2004 and it cost the NHL an entire season. The agreement that came out of that deal put in place a salary cap for teams for the first time.

Fehr, the former head of the baseball players' union who was hired by the NHLPA after the last labor deal was cut, said Wednesday at a news conference in Chicago that the players would be willing to start the season without a deal if negotiations were ongoing.

Signaling Science: What Household Solutions Repel Ants?

NO PICNIC: You can keep ant antics from ruining lunch using simple solutions made with ingredients from your kitchen. Image: George Retseck

How does a Venus flytrap know when to snap shut? Can it actually feel an insect?s tiny, spindly legs? And how do cherry blossoms know when to bloom? Can they...

Introduction
Have you ever had ants ruin your picnic? Commercial ant repellents can keep them away, but who wants to spray poison near their food? In this activity, you can investigate the effectiveness of some less toxic solutions that you may have around your home. Armed with your discoveries, you may be able to keep your next picnic from turning into an ant buffet!

Background
All animals sense chemical signals in their environments. Some animals use these signals to communicate. One animal famous for chemical communication is the ant. When you see a line of ants, it is because they are following an invisible chemical trail. This type of chemical signal is positive?it is called an attractant because it is meant to attract others. But signals can also be negative, warning other ants to stay away. This type of signal is called a repellent.

Sometimes repellents can come in handy. We don't like ants to get into our homes, so if we apply a negative chemical signal around their foundations, the signal will tell the ants to keep out. Chemical companies will sometimes try to copy a negative signal to sell as an insect repellent. But sometimes these chemicals can have side effects or be poisonous to pets or small children. Luckily, there may be less toxic remedies around your home.

Materials
???? Q-tips
???? Small cups or bottle caps
???? Large, vinyl tablecloth
???? A location outside where there are plenty of ants crawling around
???? Water
???? Sugar
???? Baking soda
???? Vinegar
???? Detergent (dish soap, laundry detergent, hand soap, etcetera)
???? Tabasco sauce
???? Lemon juice (or other citrus juice)
???? Commercial ant repellent, if you want to compare its effectiveness
???? Any other solution you would like to test!
???? Watch or stopwatch (optional)

Preparation
???? In a small cup or bottle cap, make a saturated solution by dissolving some baking soda into water. Keep adding and mixing baking soda until no more will dissolve.
???? In a small cup or bottle cap, make sugar water by dissolving sugar in water until no more sugar will dissolve.
???? If you use a commercial ant repellent, you should have adult permission and supervision.
???? Separately make up additional small cups or bottle caps of the solutions you will be testing: Water, vinegar, detergent, Tabasco sauce, lemon juice and, if you choose to test it, commercial ant repellent.

Procedure
???? Lay out your vinyl tablecloth on the ground in an area of heavy ant activity. Wait awhile for the ants to walk on the tablecloth. (Be careful when working with ants?some can sting and bite!)
???? Tip: If not many ants are walking on the tablecloth, you could try putting a small piece of fruit near them, such as an apple slice, wait until the ants cover it, and then carefully shake them off onto the tablecloth. If it is very hot outside, you may need to wait until later in the day when it cools down for ants to come out of their holes.
???? Next to the tablecloth have ready the solutions you will test: saturated baking soda solution, sugar water, water, vinegar, detergent, Tabasco sauce, lemon juice and, if you want, chemical ant repellent.
???? Test a solution on an ant by dipping a Q-tip into the solution and drawing a circle around the insect, about 2.5 centimeters in diameter. Did the ant stay inside the circle or leave it? Was there anything else you observed about the ant's behavior?
???? In this way, test solutions on the ants until you have tested at least five ants with each substance.
???? Which solutions usually kept ants inside the circle? From which did the ants readily walk out? Potential repellents will be solutions that clearly trap the ants inside a circle.
???? Were there circles in which the ants spent time standing, neither quickly leaving nor appearing trapped?
???? Extra: Once you find some potential repellents, you can figure out which ones work best. Try this activity again, but now time how long the ant remains trapped in the circle. Which repellents repel the ants for the longest amount of time?
???? Extra: You can also time how long the ant stays trapped in the circle to experiment with different concentrations of repellents. How diluted can your solutions be and still act as effective ant repellents?
???? Extra: Try a similar activity to this one but only test dry or powdered substances. You won't need a tablecloth for this; rather for a hard, dry substance like chalk you can draw the circle on a sidewalk. For a powder, like baking soda, sugar or salt, just sprinkle it in a circle around the ant. Can you find some powdered or solid substances that work as ant repellents?

Jelisa Castrodale

"Gerrard," the barista said, pushing an oversized iced coffee toward the corner of the counter.

"Gerrard?" she asked again. "Gerrard? Or Gerald? Is it Gerald?" It sat unclaimed as cappuccinos and half-caffs came and went. "Hey, you," she said, nodding when I finally looked up. "Your coffee is thawing."

It was the name on my shirt. Gerrard. My No. 4 England home jersey, still wrinkled from being balled up and thrown across the coffee table on Sunday afternoon and still unfamiliar, despite the ongoing Euro 2012.

"Don't you know who Steven Gerrard is?" I wanted to ask, ranting about his passing, his delivery and his accuracy. "And why aren't you watching Spain-Portugal," I'd say, shoving my live-streaming iPad toward the flavored syrups. Instead, I mumbled a 'thank you' before promptly tie-dying all three embroidered Lions with a stream of spilled coffee.

I've spent the past two weeks immersed in Euro 2012, rearranging my afternoons around the group stages, reading oversized tabloid headlines and wondering when Mario Balotelli will do something that results in a homemade t-shirt and/or a detour to a women's' prison.

As a Liverpool supporter, England has always been 'my' national team, even though I have zero in common with the Three Lions other than a shared respect for Gerrard, a habit of being consistently disappointing and a willingness to fight someone over a Phil Collins song.

So Sunday's quarterfinal loss to Italy is just another penalty kick-in-the-teeth that will be etched into my ? our ? collective memories, a banner hoisted into the rafters beside 1990, 1996, 1998, 2004 and 2006, the retired numbers of shame. England spent 120 minutes on their heels, making the kind of hesitant, halting passes I haven't seen since prom night.

Despite controlling the pace of the game and the ball possession ? a lopsided 68 percent ? Italy didn't capitalize until Andrea Pirlo's gloriously cocky Panenka penalty kick gently shattered England's psyche, a move so perfectly douchey, he should've just popped his collar and broken up with Molly Ringwald on the way to midfield. It also served its purpose, making Ashley Cole look like Ashley Young and Ashley Young look like Ashley Olson.

That kick, and the two that followed, ended England's Euro vacation and they don't have anything on their national team calendar until, um, John Terry's racism trial. I should be doubled over in disappointment. And I was. I am. But it doesn't feel like my pain.

As much as I align myself with the team, and as many post-loss managerial excuses and sackings I've suffered through, I feel disconnected by both heritage and history. Even the songs feel wrong. I can't yell "I know I am, I'm sure I am" without feeling like I'm mouthing the words to a hymn I don't believe in.

Maybe Italy will be different.

I don't advocate changing colors, especially to the team that just Pirlo'ed all over your upholstery. It feels as uncomfortable as wedging your incisors into someone else's retainer: wrong, unfamiliar, awkward. But after more than a year of paperwork and Google Translate-ing, of apostilles and certified long form birth certificates, I'm three months from becoming an Italian citizen.

I qualify for dual citizenship jure sanguinis ? right of blood ? through my father's family. So after phone calls to long-forgotten halls of records and middle-of-the-night faxes (Thank you, 1990!) I'll check into the Italian Consulate and will walk out with a shiny second passport, like Jason Bourne if he were less lethal and more likely to trip over something in the lobby.

Will Italy feel more like 'my' team after I have a laminated picture and a validated parking ticket? I don't know, although my dad's hair alone should've given him a spot on the reserves.? Football wasn't in the front of my brain when I started this process; it was a way to connect with family I've never known and never will, from my Renaissance painter relative to my great-grandfather to those distant cousins wedged intermittently between the Dolomites.

I don't know if my grandfather, an American citizen, was a soccer fan. The dates on my birth certificate and his death certificate are unsettlingly close together, so we never had the chance to talk about it. My memories of him are limited to his mustache, his dog and one Thanksgiving that has been faded by my mind's own Instagram filter. He shared his name with my dad. And he'll share his heritage with me.

Today I'll slowly try out my new almost-allegiance, as Juventus teammates (and 2006 World Cup winners) Pirlo and Captain Keeper Gigi Buffon try to play the umlauts off of Mesut ?zil and the rest of Joachim L?w's Germans.

Although their last meeting was a 1-1 draw, Gli Azzuri are I Perdenti ? the underdogs. Despite Pirlo's maddeningly accurate passes and the team's 36 combined shots against England, they won't have those kind of opportunities against Germany, who won't spend ninety minutes double-billing their defense as their offense.

Buffon has an 85.7 percent save percentage but he's only faced 23 shots on goal in four games; Germany has taken 33 shots on goal, scoring a Euro-leading nine times. Italy has managed four goals, netting half of them against an Ireland team that was weaker than a U2 B-side.

Germany has had an extra 48 hours to rest, recover and prepare. They know what Pirlo, what Mario Balotelli, and what Antonio Cassano are capable of (as opposed to Roy Hodgson, who seriously expected Chia Head Rooney to keep pressure on Pirlo).

I'll be watching, attempting a few tentative cheers for each cross, for each attack, just to see how it feels.

I know that Italy could get by without me.? I'm just not sure it works the other way around.

Sky-divers drop from blimp to demo Google Glass eyewear

1 day

Google co-founder?Sergey Brin turned up at the I/O keynote in San Francisco Wednesday, and revealed that a trio of basejumpers were hanging out in a blimp overhead. Brin's instructions: Jump out of the airship, land on the roof of the Moscone Center, and deliver a box containing a pair of the augmented-reality?glasses.?

Because this didn't seem complicated enough, Brin asked for mountaineers to rappel down the walls of the center, then hand off the package to cyclists, who rode into the auditorium, as you can see in the video released late Wednesday:

It was a pretty crazy stunt, though one that didn't reveal much about Google Glass except that it stays on during extreme sports, will come in a variety of styles, and weighs less than a standard pair of sunglasses.

It was also revealed that Google will allow attendees of this week's conference to pre-order a version of Google Glass for $1,500. This model will be a rough edition, not the final product, and is intended for serious developers only.

Superglue lands in woman's hair on United flight

By msnbc.com news services

A woman aboard a flight from San Diego to Houston said after a United Airlines maintenance worker fixed an overhead bin, superglue dripped in her hair. KPRC's Rachel McNeill reports.

A United passenger did not expect to get a haircut on board her June 14 flight from San Diego to Houston, but that's exactly what happened after an airline employee's snafu involving superglue.

A maintenance worker was gluing a piece of plastic on the overhead bin above Karen Reed who was seated on her flight, according to a report from KPRC in Houston.

The worker asked Reed to stand up, but he dripped some of the glue on her head and hands, she said.

"When the flight attendant said 'hey you got superglue in her hair,' he totally ignored the comment, wouldn't look at me, wouldn't make any comment and replaced the seat cushion and walked out," Reed told KPRC.

Reed had to cut large chunks of her hair and filed complaints with the airline and the Department of Transportation, according to KPRC.

"There's three clumps of super glue where it had to come out because it just wasn't coming out," she said.

Contacted by KPRC, a United Airlines representative said: "We are reaching out to Ms. Reed to apologize and offer compensation as an appreciation of her business."

Reed told KPRC that she is not sure whether she'll fly United in the future.

Los Angeles, California (PRWEB) June 27, 2012

Bree Boyce has taken the nation by storm since receiving the title of Miss South Carolina 2011; however, Bree is not your typical titleholder. Most beauty queens would not advertise that they once weighed 234 pounds and were struggling to breathe. At 17, she had reached her highest weight, 234 pounds, and started having health challenges. Her doctor warned her that her knees and joints couldn?t handle the excessive weight and she was placed on an inhaler to make it through the day. She was told that more serious problems were unavoidable if she didn?t slim down. After being on the diet roller coaster most of her teenage years, she was finally able to make a crucial shift in her mindset that allowed Bree to make a lifestyle change that she could commit to. The old fashioned formula of hard work, discipline and full commitment to a new lifestyle was Bree?s strategy for extraordinary success.

Bree has established herself as a premiere advocate on health and fitness, and childhood obesity, which is one of the most relevant health topics in our nation?s history and at the core of the Lifestyle Intervention Conference, which is why her involvement as host for this year?s event is in perfect alignment with Michael Cartwright?s vision of healthy lifestyle choices for the planet. Bree knows the challenges of obesity on all levels and most importantly, what it takes to escape the deadly cycle.

Conference Co-Host and founder Michael Cartwright said, ?Bree Boyce embodies the very essence of the Lifestyle Intervention Conference and the vision our team has for creating the healthiest America possible. We are both humbled and thrilled to have Ms. Boyce as the host of our event, her story of hope and transformation is truly amazing; however, it is her commitment to inspiring change in kids and adults, that makes her involvement such a gift.? Mr. Cartwright added, ?We are launching an attack on process addictions and overconsumption across the country and any team with Bree Boyce is a winning team.?

The 2012 Lifestyle Intervention Conference unfolds at Las Vegas? Bellagio from October 1st?3rd and will offer extensive continuing education courses for Dietitians, Social Workers, Trainers, Psychologists and more. Your Lead Generation Team's Productivity and Conversions Need to ...

In recent posts, I?ve given advice about ways of maintaing accountability within your sales organization, and more specifically as it pertains to your lead generation function. This week, I?m going to continue with that trend, because each week it becomes more clear that those teams that expose their lead qualification reps? daily performance to management (and obviously one another on the team), are far more productive and ultimately successful than those who only expose it maybe once a week, month, or quarter.

I?ve seen some lead gen teams (including the company in the portfolio that I worked for a couple years back) actually require an end-of-day email update coming directly from the lead gen rep. In my case, the update included number of calls made, number of conversations had, demos set, and a quick synopsis of the conversations that resulted in demos, as well as any impediments that held me back that day. The end-of-day report took me about 15-20 minutes to write (depending on the demos set, and the amount of detail pertaining to those conversations that I wrote), and I sent it to both the venture partners at OpenView as well as the management team at the portfolio company, including the CEO. There were some days that I felt it was burden (particularly on those days when I didn?t have anything too wonderful to report), but at the end of the day, it kept me incredibly accountable to what I committed to when I accepted the job offer, and you better believe that I kept myself incredibly organized and highly productive each and everyday to make my end-of-day report as impressive as possible.

Plus, there was honestly NOTHING better than having a great day and getting a reply-all from the CEO telling me ?Great job today!? Or even having a day when I didn?t set any demos but left 50 voicemails and felt mentally exhausted, but still had a venture partners say ? ?Keep your head up, the demos will come with that type of activity!?

Don?t want your rep spending the last chunk of the day writing out this kind of report? Hey, it?s not for everyone or every manager. In fact, there is another great option. Have an automated email sent every evening coming from Salesforce.com (or whatever CRM you are using while wishing you are on Salesforce) that pulls your team?s daily productivity dashboard. If you are slick, you can also have your messaging dashboard sent to management and marketing (I discuss the messaging dashboard in this post).

If you?ve hired competitive, hardworking, and driven individuals this end-of-day update will be on their mind and keep them focused. ?Hmm?I could watch this 10-minute long YouTube video that my friend sent me, but it?s 3pm and I?ve only made 20 calls, had 3 conversations, and set no demos today ? maybe I should watch it later.?

You might be reading this and thinking ? wow, Devon seems a little OCD. Hey, I?ve heard worse. But, let?s be serious. Outbound lead qualification is a VERY expensive form of marketing for your business, and there are a LOT of distractions that could pull your team away from being productive. I?m assuming that you, as the manager, are juggling 100 balls because you are working at an expansion-stage organization. Why not find some simple ways to keep accountability high so that you don?t have to be breathing down everyone?s neck everyday? Let these updates push your reps to better manage themselves.

Do you have a rep who is really turned off by an end-of-day report (handcrafted or automated)? First of all, that?s a red flag. What does he/she have to hide?! Second of all, for a relatively junior role within the organization (and I?m not saying entry level ? because in most cases, 2-4 years experience is IDEAL for this role), honestly, what other opportunity do you get to have exposure to senior management and have them observing your hard work, commitment, drive and passion? I honestly believe that if I wasn?t sending my personal daily report as a lead qualifier a couple years back, I wouldn?t have received the promotion that I did after 6 months on the job because I wouldn?t have had that level of exposure to senior management!

Transgenic technique 'eliminates' a specific neural circuit in brain of primates

ScienceDaily (June 26, 2012) ? In the brains of humans and non-human primates, over 100 billion nerve cells build up complicated neural circuits and produce higher brain functions. When an attempt is made to perform gene therapy for neurological diseases like Parkinson's disease, it is necessary to specify a responsible neural circuit out of many complicated circuits.?Until now, however, it was difficult to introduce a target gene into this particular circuit selectively.

The collaborative research group consisting of Professor Masahiko Takada from Primate Research Institute, Kyoto University, Professor Atsushi Nambu from National Institute for Physiological Sciences, National Institutes of Natural Sciences, and Professor Kazuto KOBAYASHI from Fukushima Medical University School of Medicine have now developed a gene transfer technique that can "eliminate"a specific neural circuit in non-human primates for the first time.

They applied this technique to the basal ganglia, the brain region that is affected in movement disorders such as Parkinson's disease, and successfully eliminated a particular circuit selectively to elucidate its functional role. This technique can be applied to gene therapy for various neurological diseases in humans. This research achievement was supported by the Strategic Research Program of Brain Sciences by MEXT of Japan.

The research group developed a special viral vector, NeuRet-IL-2R alpha-GFP viral vector, expressing human interleukin type 2 alpha receptor, which the cell death inducer immunotoxin binds. Nerve cells transfected with this viral vector cause cell death by immunotoxin. First, the research group injected the viral vector into the subthalamic nucleus that is a component of the basal ganglia. Then, they injected immunotoxin into the motor cortex, an area of the cerebral cortex that controls movement, and succeed in selective elimination of the "hyperdirect pathway" that is one of the major circuits connecting the motor cortex to the basal ganglia. As a result, they have discovered that neuronal excitation observed at the early stage occurs through this hyperdirect pathway when motor information derived from the cortex enters the basal ganglia.

Professors Takada and Nambu expect that this gene transfer technique enables us to elucidate higher brain functions in primates and to develop primate models of various psychiatric/neurological disorders and their potential treatments including gene therapy. They think that this should provide novel advances in the field of neuroscience research that originate from Japan.

This research was supported by the Strategic Research Program of Brain Sciences by MEXT of Japan.

Islamist joy as Morsy elected Egypt president

CAIRO (Reuters) - Islamist Mohamed Morsy was declared Egypt's first freely elected president on Sunday, sparking joy among his Muslim Brotherhood supporters on the streets who vowed to continue to try to wrest power from armed forces reluctant to cede ultimate control.

But many Egyptians, and anxious Western allies, also urged Morsy to work fast to repair the economy and bitter divisions in society exposed since the overthrow of Hosni Mubarak fractured the police state which had kept the country subdued for decades.

Morsy defeated former general Ahmed Shafik in a run-off last weekend by a convincing 3.5 percentage points, or nearly 900,000 votes, taking 51.7 percent of the total, officials said. It ended a week of disputes over the count that had frayed nerves.

Morsy succeeds Mubarak, who was pushed aside by his fellow officers 16 months ago to appease the Arab Spring revolution.

The military council which has ruled the biggest Arab nation since then, curbed the powers of the presidency by decree last week, meaning the head of state will have to work closely with the army on a planned democratic constitution.

The generals say they want to hand over to civilian rule but are plainly set on defending their privileges and suspicious of the ability of Egypt's fragmented, and long oppressed, political movements to establish a stable constitutional democracy.

The United States, the army's key sponsor and long wary of the rise of political Islam, joined other Western powers in congratulating Morsy and calling on him to form a government of national unity and to respect all Egyptians' civil rights.

Brotherhood officials, speaking as supporters turned Cairo's Tahrir Square into a roaring sea of flags and chants of "Allahu akbar!" (God is greatest), said they would press on with protest vigils to demand that the ruling military council cancel this month's dissolution of the Islamist-led parliament and a decree which gave the generals powers that will restrict the president.

"Morsy is the first truly democratically elected president in Egypt," the Brotherhood's Yasser Ali told Reuters.

"He has the legitimacy and will sit down with the military council and all the political forces to resolve the outstanding issues over parliament and the constitutional decree and the newly imposed emergency law."

"Speak! Have no fear! The military must go!" crowds chanted on Tahrir Square, seat of the revolt, although senior officials in the movement, the veteran adversary of the army for decades, said they wanted to avoid outright confrontation.

There were some isolated scuffles in parts of Cairo between rival groups. Several hundred Shafik supporters in the middle-class suburb of Nasr City chanted "Save Egypt! The Brotherhood will destroy it!", while soldiers tried to keep traffic moving.

Field Marshal Hussein Tantawi, who heads the ruling Supreme Council of the Armed Forces (SCAF), called to congratulate the 60-year-old Morsy on his victory, state television said.

How these two men cooperate will determine Egypt's uncertain path from revolution to democracy and its relations with anxious Arab and Western allies: Tantawi was Mubarak's defense minister for 20 years and has been close to the Pentagon; Morsy, jailed more than once under the old regime, has a doctorate in engineering from the University of Southern California.

PROTESTS GO ON

Another official at the Brotherhood's headquarters, Gihad Haddad, said demonstrations would also continue to press the army: "The peaceful protests will continue in the squares and across Egypt. The struggle for a new Egypt is just beginning."

Those who voted for Shafik as a bulwark against a religious rule that they fear will mean intolerance and alienation from the West were fearful: businessman Maged Abdel Wadud, 45, who had gathered with others at a hotel hoping to greet a victorious Shafik said: "This is a very bad day for Egypt.

"I am so, so upset. I can't imagine this man becoming a president of Egypt. This is the beginning of the end for Egypt."

Some of those backing Shafik accused the military council and Tantawi of "selling out" to the Brotherhood. But a source close to the council itself insisted the election had been entirely fair, in contrast to those under Mubarak.

Describing it as "a true example of democracy to the world" the military council source stressed the pressure was now on Morsy to take responsibility - something many think might backfire on the Brotherhood if Egypt remains in crisis:

"The onus now is on the new president to unite the nation and create a true coalition of political and revolutionary forces to rebuild the country economically and politically," the source said. "The world is now watching the new president to see whether his tenure will reflect all political currents."

Western powers, and Israel, have been concerned about the Islamist turn in Egypt. But Washington and Europe, both big aid donors, have also pressed the military to accept democracy, while urging the Brotherhood to respect all Egyptians' rights - notably those of women and the large Christian minority.

"This is an historic moment for Egypt," said British Foreign Secretary William Hague. "I welcome President Morsy's statement that he intends to form an inclusive government that governs on behalf of all the Egyptian people."

In his congratulations, French President Francois Hollande said: "It is key today that the transition which started in February 2011 continues, so that a democratic and pluralist political system establishes itself in Egypt, guaranteeing civil liberties and political freedom to all citizens."

In Israel, at war with the Brotherhood's Palestinian offshoot Hamas, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said he "respected" the democratic outcome in Egypt and expected to continue cooperation under the two states' peace treaty.

In Hamas-run Gaza, where Palestinians hope Morsy may end Cairo's cooperation with an Israeli blockade, celebratory gunfire rattled across the crowded coastal territory.

Iran, which is at odds with most Arab states, welcomed what it called an "Islamic awakening" in Egypt.

Reformist Egyptian politician Mohamed ElBaradei, a former U.N. diplomat, tweeted: "It is time for us to all work together as Egyptians in a framework of national consensus."

A senior Western diplomat in Cairo said: "This is a truly historic moment for Egypt - a triumph over the politics of fear and prejudice. Egypt has a civilian, democratically elected president for the first time in its history. The Muslim Brotherhood are far from a perfect organization, but Morsy's election represents a genuine result for the revolution."

He said he did not expect the movement to push its complaints so far as to provoke the military council to react and take from the presidency those powers it still has:

"The Muslim Brotherhood will take what they've got - a prize unimaginable to them 18 months ago," the diplomat said. "An imperfect presidency is way better than none at all.

"It's part of the new and delicate act of political compromise, part of Egypt's new cohabitation."

LIBERALS CAUTIOUS

Half of those who voted in last month's first round of the election backed neither Morsy nor Shafik and many who voted in the run-off voted negatively - either against Morsy's religious agenda or against Shafik as a symbol of military rule.

Hamdeen Sabahy, the secular leftist who finished a close third behind Shafik in the first round, called on Morsy to "swiftly form a national presidential administration and a government that expresses national reconciliation and represents all currents and the diversity of Egyptian society powers".

For Morsy a spokesman said: "This is a testament to the resolve of the Egyptian people to make their voice heard."

Shafik, a former air force commander and Mubarak's last prime minister, offered no immediate reaction. He has said he would offer to serve in a Morsy administration.

Morsy won the first round ballot in May with a little under a quarter of the vote. He has pledged to form an inclusive government to appeal to all the 82 million Egyptians.

"President Morsy will struggle to control the levers of state," Elijah Zarwan, senior policy fellow at the European Council on Foreign Relations, said in Cairo.

"He will likely face foot-dragging and perhaps outright attempts to undermine his initiatives from key institutions. Faced with such resistance, frustration may tempt him to fall into the trap of attempting to throw his new weight around," Zarwan told Reuters. "This would be a mistake.

"His challenge is to lead a bitterly divided, fearful, and angry population toward a peaceful democratic outcome, without becoming a reviled scapegoat for continued military rule."

ISLAMIC RENAISSANCE

Morsy has promised a moderate Islamist agenda to steer Egypt into a new democratic era where autocracy will be replaced by transparent government that respects human rights and revives the fortunes of a powerful Arab state long in decline. Morsy is promising an "Egyptian renaissance with an Islamic foundation".

Yet the stocky, bespectacled party official appears something of an accidental president: he was only flung into the race at the last moment by the disqualification on a technicality of Khairat al-Shater, the group's preferred choice.

With a stiff and formal style, Morsy cast himself as a reluctant latecomer to the race, who cited religious fear of judgment day as one of his reasons for running. He struggled to shake off his label as the Brotherhood's "spare tire".

Questions remain over the extent to which Morsy will operate independently of other Brotherhood leaders once in office: his manifesto was drawn up by the group's policymakers. The role Shater might play has been one focus of debate in Egypt.

"I will treat everyone equally and be a servant of the Egyptian people," Morsy said at his campaign headquarters in Cairo shortly after polling ended last Sunday. He gave up his membership of the Brotherhood after being elected.

Turnout was only 51.8 percent of the 50 million-strong electorate, slightly up on the first round but indicative still of a nation unused to having its voice heard without risking punishment and uncertain of the worth of the candidates.
