High-speed rail efforts gain momentum across the country

The fields of north-central Illinois may seem like an unlikely backdrop to showcase the future of the nation?s transportation system, but for fans of high-speed rail, they may have done just that.

On Friday, a train on Amtrak?s Chicago-St. Louis corridor traversed those fields at a speed of 111 mph., 40 percent faster than the line?s normal top speed of 79 mph and faster than any U.S. train outside Amtrak?s Northeast Corridor.

?It was interesting to see how smooth the transition was from 79 to (111),? said Josh Kauffman, spokesman for the Illinois Department of Transportation, who was on the train, along with other officials, including Illinois Governor Pat Quinn and U.S. Secretary of Transportation Ray LaHood.

?It was an historic ride,? said Kauffman, ?and we?re extremely pleased with the results.?

It was also, perhaps, an unintended acknowledgment of the fact that, after years of high hopes, high-speed rail in the U.S. remains a slow-going affair. Despite the celebratory mood aboard Friday?s train, it?s worth noting that the ?historic? high-speed ride only covered 15 miles of the 285-mile route and that extending the service will take years and billions of dollars.

?People keep talking about top speed, but what really matters to travelers is average speed ? the trip time itself,? said Kenneth Orski, publisher of transportation newsletter "Innovation Briefs,"?and a?former DOT official. ?Even with billions of dollars in improvements, the average speed won?t improve that much.?

Still, efforts to expand the nation?s high-speed rail offerings continue. Among the most recent developments:

• Last month, Amtrak ran several tests along its Northeast Corridor, running Acela Express trains at speeds of up to 165 mph ? current top speed is 135 mph ? on four sections of track in Delaware, Maryland, New Jersey, Rhode Island and Massachusetts, as part of efforts to raise regular service speeds to 160 mph by 2017.
  
• Earlier this year, trains on Amtrak?s Wolverine service between Chicago and Pontiac, Mich., began running at 110 mph on a 90-mile section between Porter, Ind., and Kalamazoo. At build-out, officials hope to cut travel time between Chicago and Detroit to less than four hours.
  
• In California, plans to build an 800-mile high-speed train line between Los Angeles and San Francisco moved forward last month after the federal government approved a section of the route between Merced and Fresno. Construction is expected to start next year, although several lawsuits have already been filed against the project.
  

Ironically, perhaps, such projects come at a time when train travel in the U.S. in general is at a crossroads. On the one hand, Amtrak carried 31.2 million passengers during the last 12 months, the highest annual ridership total in the company?s 41-year history. On the other, funding for multi-billion-dollar projects is increasingly uncertain at a time of budget cutbacks, ballooning deficits and a presidential election defined by two diametrically opposed views of government.

In the meantime, riders on the Chicago-St. Louis corridor may take solace in the fact that Amtrak expects to begin offering regular 110 mph service on that 15-mile stretch by Thanksgiving and on 75 percent of the route by 2015, cutting trip times by more than an hour.

?The difference between 79 and 110 mph isn't necessarily all that much, but at 110, the number of people they can carry improves dramatically,? said Rod Diridon Sr., executive director of the Mineta Transportation Institute at San Jose State University. ?At that point, it really begins to compete with short-hop air travel.?

Union-backed poll of FL: Obama-Romney tied, but prez could lead by 5 with early voters

Americans United for Change, a union-backed group, released a one-page memo from a Mellman Group poll of Florida voters showing the race dead even in Florida: President Obama and Mitt Romney are tied 47-47.

"Our just completed survey shows that the presidential race in the Sunshine State will be yet another nail-biter, but President Obama has some key advantages over Romney beneath the surface," the memo said.

The most intriguing aspect of the poll: Obama might lead Romney 50-45 percent among voters who already cast ballots; about 5 percent refused to say for whom they voted. As today, that number of absentee-ballot voters is 830,000 in Florida. When the poll was taken (Oct. 18-21) the number of absentee voters was about 750,000.

Caveat: we don't know if the numbers are good because there are no crosstabs and it's not clear how many respondents were Republicans, Democrats and independents there are. Still, Democrats are holding their own with absentee ballots cast and they typically dominate in-person early voting, set to begin Saturday. Obama and Romney will be in the state around that time to turn out the early vote.

The President leads registered independents 49%-44% (7% undecided), and self-described moderates by a larger 59% to 29% margin. Our results also suggest Obama holds an image advantage among the undecided?with 41% holding a favorable and 37% unfavorable. However undecideds harbor quite negative views of Governor Romney, with just 25% favorable and a 51% majority offering an unfavorable opinion of the GOP challenger.

The President holds sizeable leads among several key groups, including women (51%-45%), younger (under 50) voters (51% to 40%), Hispanics (60%-39%), and African-Americans (90%-7%).

With a strong and disciplined get-out-the vote effort, President Obama has a strong chance to repeat his 2008 win in Florida.

The Samsung Galaxy Note II is coming to America, and unlike its predecessor, it's not being as quiet about the move. In a completely unprecedented feat, the mammoth smartphone not only won over the hearts of four national American carriers and one regional network, it did so without having to make sacrifices in its design, specs or even its name. This is a considerable amount of progress when taking into account the fact that only two mobile operators adopted the original Galaxy Note -- the inaugural phablet, if you will -- and they did so months after its global launch. Heck, T-Mobile released its variant of the Note just three months ago, which likely will be a sour point to early adopters for a long time to come.

As you may have seen in our review of the global Note II, there's a reason for all of the buzz circulating around this new flagship device; it's good. It's very good. Once you get used to the idea of a 5.5-inch smartphone with an included stylus S Pen, you'll take heed of the incredibly fast quad-core processor, the latest version of Android, the high-end camera and the litany of other top-notch features that have helped the device become worthy of our praise.

Human blood types have deep evolutionary roots

Chimps, gibbons and other primates are not just humans? evolutionary cousins; a new analysis suggests they are also our blood brothers. The A, B and O blood types in people evolved at least 20 million years ago in a common ancestor of humans and other primates, new research suggests.

The analysis deepens a mystery surrounding the evolutionary history of the ABO blood system, and should prompt further research into why the different blood groups have persisted over time, Laure S?gurel of the University of Chicago and colleagues report online October 22 in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

?Their evidence is rather convincing that this is a shared, very old capability that has remained throughout the divergence of the species,? says doctor and transfusion specialist Martin Olsson of Lund University in Sweden.

Different forms of a single blood type gene determine what types of molecules sit on your red blood cells: type A molecules, type B molecules, A and B together, or no intact surface molecules in the case of type O (O was originally called type C, then was changed to O for the German ?ohne,? meaning ?without?).

The A, B and O versions of the gene differ only slightly, and scientists have debated two scenarios to explain their evolution. One posits that the A version of the gene existed long ago, and the B and/or O versions later cropped up independently in several species (including humans, gorillas, baboons and chimps). Alternatively, all of those species may have inherited the A and B types from a single ancestor.

To get some bloody perspective on the matter, researchers led by S?gurel looked at a particular stretch of DNA in the blood type gene in humans, bonobos, chimpanzees, gorillas, orangutans and several species of monkey. Then the scientists compared that stretch of DNA across species on the larger primate family tree. The pattern they saw suggests that the A and B blood groups were around at least 20 million years ago, well before the chimp-human split, and probably as far back as the common ancestor of humans and old-world monkeys. Sections of DNA in the human A version, for example, more closely matched the A version that gibbons have than the human B version of the gene.

Exactly why evolution would favor a mix of blood types in so many species is a mystery. Depending on blood type, people are more or less susceptible to particular pathogens. Type O people, for example, are more susceptible to cholera and plague, while people with type A are more susceptible to smallpox. Blood group diversity may have been maintained for so long because each version was immunologically advantageous in certain times and places.

?That diversity may have led to protection against whatever might come your way,? says glycoimmunologist Brian Cobb of Case Western University in Cleveland.

People with type A are also more prone to dangerous blood clots, Olsson says. That?s a disadvantage in the modern world, but in the days when humans and their ancestors were having babies in caves and fighting predators without the option of an emergency room, such clotting may have been beneficial.

?When we couldn?t do transfusions or patch people together it may have been good to coagulate better,? he says. ?If that mammoth or Siberian tiger got you, you wouldn?t want to bleed to death.?
