The following voter apathy is brought to you by a galaxy far, far away...

?

A picture has recently been making the rounds on Facebook, depicting the righteous face of Obi-Wan Kenobi, Darth Vader menacingly raising his hand, and below them, the obliviously happy visage of Jar-Jar Binks.? Under the pictures, respectively, are the captions ?How You See Your Candidate?, ?How You See Their Candidate?, and ?What Both of Them are Really Like?. ?

Hilarious -- and at the same time, a sad illustration of a section of Americans who look at pictures such as these, say ?That?s right!?, pat themselves on the back, and proceed to stay home on Election Day.? It?s no secret that politicians have enjoyed a less-than favorable reception that comes with the job of one man deciding the fate of many men. ?

Questionable agendas, broken promises and scandals political and personal have changed America?s views of our leaders to the point where we regularly group them with lawyers and IRS employees.? The Watergate scandal and former President Clinton?s near-impeachment are the first to come to mind, though they have not been the first, last, or most damaging of skeletons in thrust-open closets.

?I?m not voting,? a friend of mine proudly proclaimed, with a tone that suggested his conclusion to be above all other options.? ?They?re all the same anyway.?? President Obama and Governor Romney are two very different people with policies and views that could hardly be described as ?the same?.? I fail to understand how people can cavalierly judge both candidates to be ?the same? without reading about and understanding the policies and platforms of either one. ?

Do not look to political advertisements or internet pictures for your information.? With the amount of negativity in the political campaigns, it?s no surprise that viewers would attempt to take a third option and vote for nobody.? But there are more sources of information than smear campaigns and superPACs.? The undecided -- and the easily-influenced -- voters see a small snippet of information, and then out of sheer laziness decide that there?s nothing more for them to see, and not vote. ?

This is a dangerous decision.? Post-election, that non-voter will look out his or her window, find something to complain about, point at Washington and declare the mess to be their problem.? But inaction can be just as dangerous as action.? Concerning my friends who don?t agree with me politically -- we may not stand for the same issues.? But at least I know that they stand, and not sit.
