Video: Schwarzenegger admits he ?inflicted tremendous pain?

>> now to politics and the question of why we're hearing so little about the war in afghanistan during the race for the white house . let's bring in nbc's david gregory , moderator of "meet the press." david in 2008 candidate obama talked about this war as the war we must win. this time around he notedly talks about winding down the war. mitt romney didn't even mention it in his convention speech. why does this not seem to be a major interest in a campaign?

>> the stakes are so high, lester, as you know being on the ground there. i think there's a couple of reasons. from the republican point of view, they want distance from the bush presidency , particularly the bush foreign policy of engagement in war in afghanistan and iraq . from the president's point of view, he wanted to narrow the focus, talk about al qaeda , defeat al qaeda . the crowning achievement killing osama bin laden . the nation building work in afghanistan is frankly something that became too difficult, too entrenched for the american people to keep up with. we are there longer than the soviets were there. i think there's a recognition that that job was simply too difficult, the notion that we were going to turn around the government, really be able to rebuild the country. there is a phrase that general petreas used, was iraq good enough and now is iraq good enough, safe enough, stable enough so u.s. forces can come home?

>> when you look it at the positions between president obama and mitt romney , is there a lot of daylight in their views of the policy regarding afghanistan ?

>> frankly, there's not. romney will criticize the president for announcing a firm deadline for 0 withdrawal of u.s. forces . it's long been thought by republicans that doing so would allow the taliban , particularly the taliban that's holed up in pakistan and that crosses freely into afghanistan , giving them that heads-up that they can just wait america out and then do their damage. the reality is that there's been a negotiation with the taliban and the coalition forces . the taliban is likely to have some role in ruling afghanistan is disappointing and as tragic as that may be to people around the world, that is a definite possibility as we move forward.

>> david , a quick question about the debates now three days away. right now the latest gallup poll shows the president with the six-point lead. historically how much impact do these debates have on elections?

>> well, they can have a lot of impact. it's a high-profile moment, tens of millions of people watching . as you look at the national number and you look at the spread and you look he battleground state , on the order of seven points that mitt romney has to make up, it's a lot of ground to try to move if you have a smaller pool of undecided voters. that's a big hurdle right now for mitt romney .

>> and what do you have coming up on "meet the press" this morning, david ?

>> the state of the race, governor chris christie , white house adviser david plouffe .

>> david gregory , thank you very

Does Apple have a Scott Forstall problem? - Apple 2.0 - Fortune Tech

Forstall demoing Apple's new Maps app

FORTUNE -- There's no shortage of embarrassing instances where Apple (AAPL) Maps "fell short" -- as Tim Cook's public apology put it -- but on Friday Canadian reader John Garner pointed me to a particularly striking one.

Jason Matheson, a fellow Canadian with a knack for Mac programming, ran a quick Xcode script that compared the iPhone 5's map of Ontario with an official list of the province's cities and towns. Of 2,028 place names, Matheson reports, 400 were correct on Apple's Maps app, 389 were pretty close, 551 were clearly incorrect and 688 weren't on the map at all.

"There's no excuse," Garner writes. "Quality control on Apple Maps had to have been terrible to not get this right. Bluntly, Scott Forstall should be fired over this mess."

Garner is not alone in pointing the finger at Forstall, the senior vice president for iOS software and the Apple executive -- after Cook -- most often described as an heir apparent to Steve Jobs.

In his current Monday Note, Jean-Louis Gass?e called the ridicule Apple has suffered these last two weeks "largely self-inflicted." Apple usually under-promises and over-delivers, but according to Gass?e Forstall did just the opposite:

"[Forstall's] demo was flawless, 2D and 3D maps, turn-by-turn navigation, spectacular flyovers? but not a word from the stage about the app's limitations, no self-deprecating wink, no admission that iOS Maps is an infant that needs to learn to crawl before walking, running, and ultimately lapping the frontrunner, Google Maps. Instead, we're told that Apple's Maps may be 'the most beautiful, powerful mapping service ever.'"

Forstall did something similar last year when he unveiled Siri -- Apple's voice-activated personal assistant. Although it was labeled "beta" -- computer jargon for "work in progress" -- in Forstall's demo the application seemed not only to understand every question he put to it, but to have a snappy answer. It has not worked so well in the wild, at least not for me.

"Siri has been an embarrassment for Apple," writes Business Insider's Jay Yarow in a piece titled The Apple Maps Disaster Is Really Bad News For Apple's 'CEO-In-Waiting'. "This is his second consecutive high-profile screw up with iOS software."

Forstall came to Apple from NeXT and first rose to power on the strength of OS X Leopard, a project he managed. But it was by creating the original iPhone operating system -- since renamed iOS -- that he achieved his current status. As the manager of the platform that generates more than half of Apple's revenue, Forstall has amassed enormous clout within the company -- and more than his share of enemies.

"If there's a knock on Forstall," wrote Adam Lashinsky in Inside Apple, "it's that he wears his ambition in plainer view than the typical Apple executive. He blatantly accumulated influence in recent years, including, it is whispered, when Jobs was on medical leave."

According to an unflattering profile in Bloomberg Businessweek last year, Forstall has such a fraught relationship with other members of the executive team -- including Jony Ive and Bob Mansfield -- that they avoid meetings with him unless Tim Cook is present. The piece goes on to say:

"Some former associates of Forstall, none of whom would comment on the record for fear of alienating Apple, say he routinely takes credit for collaborative successes [and] deflects blame for mistakes."

That's one way to manage a team. In fact, it was often said that it was Steve Jobs' way. But it may not be Tim Cook's.

Mayer: Maps app is not the only Apple misstep

(CNN) -

Take a close look at the icon that Apple created for their new Maps app and you'll notice a few things. It points out the location of Apple headquarters at 1 Infinite Loop, but the red pin has been replaced by a blue line, one that leads away from their main building and suggests that you make a hard right through the median to jump onto the freeway.

From a tactical point of view, in their growing fight against Google, rushing out a new map application made sense. But the app itself is clearly worse than the one it replaced, and an audience used to constant improvements and refinements isn't happy. Meticulous attention to detail, once the hallmark of the Apple brand, seems to have been pushed aside for corporate competition, leaving everybody wondering what's next.

Maps is the most obvious misstep, but it isn't the only one Apple has made recently.

There has been a trail of failures and dead ends the past few years that people don't talk nearly as much about. They include Mobile Me, Ping, Siri, Apple TV and the ongoing mess that is the desktop version of iTunes. And iCloud is clunky because it's about trying to change the way we work, whether we like it or not.

So what happened, and what does it mean for the future of the most successful technology company of our lifetime?

What Steve Jobs saw was that the true promise of technology was to combine software and hardware in a way that would create a rich user experience. Instead of giving users what they were asking for, he succeeded by constantly giving people things they didn't even know they wanted until they held it in their hands.

Now everyone has come to expect a certain kind of perfection and showmanship from Apple that can only happen when you're revealing things that are so new and different that users find themselves gasping in surprise and delight.

Apple has been able to do that for quite a while with a brilliant visionary at the helm. But having totally redefined the consumer electronics landscape, Apple now finds itself without a creative leader and caught in the expectations of its own success.

As users become more comfortable with the devices they have, there's a justified sense of entitlement that the application they've come to rely on will continue to provide the functionality they've come to expect. To put it another way, discovering that there's no longer transit directions when you're looking to find the bus home is never a nice surprise.

Despite some neat new features, the iOS 6 lacks any of the usual big ideas that take out the sting. Instead, the new operating system cleans up some dirty corners and puts on a fresh coat of digital paint to get ready for bigger changes down the road.

But slow and steady won't win the race. When it comes to incremental steps, Google, Amazon and Microsoft are all experts at software that may not start out great, amazing or different but clearly improves through iteration. And Google is busy buying companies like Zagats and Frommers to quickly corner the market on rich, valuable data in a way that Apple will never be able to.

Without the ability to launch a new platform as bold as the iPod, iPhone and iPad, it gets harder and harder for Apple to truly innovate. The problem isn't that Apple is failing to do what it has always done, it's that its ability to "think different" might go away.

While Apple, under the guidance of Tim Cook, will continue to create its beautiful, crafted combination of hardware and software for at least another decade, that will no longer be enough to continue to take the risks they need to in order to wow the world the way they have since Steve Jobs showed us the iPod 11 years ago.

Out of 50,000 Windows 8 users, 53% prefers Windows 7

A large Windows 8 support forum has done a survey and asked ?more than 50,000 people about their opinion on Microsoft?s latest and upcoming OS. The forum is visited by many early adopters, users who like to try out new things. In this case this means people who were able to get Windows 8 before it?s official release (October 26th 2012) ?such as those who downloaded the Windows 8 Consumer Preview, ?MSDN, Technet and Dreamspark subscribers and, likely, also pirates who obtained a Windows 8 RTM copy.

The results aren?t?surprising?and pretty much match what people are stating in our Windows 8 forum too. While users like the easy?installation, ?fast boot and shutdown of Windows 8, they aren?t too happy about the Charms Bar and the Metro GUI in general. ?However most users are annoyed with the pricing of Windows 8. It?s the biggest thing to change, according to the forum users, about 35% of them say that Microsoft should lower it. During the release time ?Windows 8 can be obtained for $39.99, but that?s a promotional price, it is expected that afterwards the price will be much steeper.

The annoyance with the pricing scheme could be due to the fact that most users are not used to paying?separately?for an operating system.?Most computer users get the operating system with their computer, tablet or phone where the OS is pre-installed by the hardware vendor.?It?s probably disappointing for Microsoft?that less than 25% of the users like Metro, Skydrive and the new Windows 8 App store.

Even worse for Microsoft is that 53% of the users prefer Windows 7 and even 25% prefers Windows XP over Windows 8. ?Interested in more??Get all the numbers here.

A Chinese-owned company?s attempts to acquire four wind farms in northern Oregon will be blocked by the White House, citing security concerns, it was announced Friday.

President Barack Obama?s administration said the Ralls Corporation, a privately owned company, acquired the wind farms near a U.S. Navy facility months ago, which represents a potential security problem. It was the first time in more than two decades that the White House prevented such a foreign transaction.

?There is credible evidence that leads me to believe that Ralls Corporation ? might take action that threatens to impair the national security of the United States,? Obama said in a statement, adding that the farms are located near military-restricted airspace.?

Ralls Corp., owned by the China-based Sany Group, must sell off its holdings within 90 days along with the associated intellectual property, and contracts, the White House said. The company also must remove structures?including concrete foundations?and other equipment from the farms within 14 days.

\>");

The White House said the farms were within three to five miles of the Oregon naval training base, which carries out training for air-to-air combat, electronic warfare, drone testing, and bombing, according to the Financial Times.

Obama and his Republican presidential opponent, Mitt Romney, have attacked one another in recent weeks over how communist China should best be dealt with.

?Right before the elections why would he not go with the committee?s recommendations and allow a Chinese deal to proceed?? Farhad Jalinous, a partner with Kaye Scholer LLP and who works on similar cases, told the Wall Street Journal. ?It wouldn?t make sense.?

The move comes just under two weeks after Obama filed a complaint with the World Trade Organization against China?s illegal subsidization of auto exports. The complaint alleges that China invested at least $1 billion in recent years that provide auto and parts manufactures an unfair advantage over their American counterparts, which are in direct competition with them.?

The last time the president blocked such a deal over national security concerns was in 1990 when President George H. W. Bush halted a Chinese aerospace technology company from buying a U.S. manufacturing company.

Oil prices march upward for second day

BANGKOK (AP) ? Hopes that the global economy might see some improvement after Spain announced far-reaching steps to fix its ailing economy helped keep oil prices on the upswing for a second day.

Benchmark oil for November delivery was up 61 cents to $92.46 per barrel at late afternoon Bangkok time in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. The contract rose $1.87 to finish at $91.85 per barrel on the Nymex on Thursday.

Brent crude gained $1.28 to $113.29 on the ICE Futures Exchange in London.

"Risk appetite improved yesterday on the Spanish budget," analysts at Credit Agricole CIB in Hong Kong said in a market commentary. "With the Spanish budget paving the way for an official bailout request ... renewed concern about the Eurozone crisis has eased."

After three straight days of declines, oil posted gains in Asia on Thursday, helped by expectations the People's Bank of China will soon take more steps to stimulate the world's No. 2 economy. Spain later announced severe budget cuts intended to convince the world that it can meet deficit-reduction targets.

Still, oil analyst Stephen Schork said he expects "high volatility" as oil contracts for October expire.

In other Nymex trading:

? Heating oil rose 2.1 cents to $3.172 per gallon.

? Wholesale gasoline gained 1.2 cents to $3.156 per gallon.

? Natural gas rose 0.1 cent to $3.306 per 1,000 cubic feet.

Momenta

By Mike Hartnett

Michael Barker?s parents started selling jewelry when they were college students in 1970. They went into the dormitories and went door to door. In 1972, they opened a retail store in Northwood, NH, and Michael was born the next year.

One of Michael?s earliest memories was of crawling around on the floor behind the glass display cases, amazed at the shark teeth his parents were selling. When Michael was five, his parents took him to his first craft fair. They sold jewelry and cookies and when the fair ended, they used the proceeds to buy Michael a bicycle.

Momenta?s original name was American Traditional Stencils, which began in 1978 when a customer asked Michael?s parents if they could recreate a brass stencil she owned. They said yes, and then quickly taught themselves about photo-etching, the process by which stencils are created from a sheet of thin metal. Michael?s dad later got a patent on a unique form of photo-etching for making jewelry.

?My entire childhood, I remember working in the family business,? Michael said. ?After school and summer vacations were spent packaging stencils and assembling stamps. The stamps were the worst because you had to cut out each piece of rubber by hand, and then glue the rubber to a piece of foam before applying the completed kit to the wood handle.

?But it also taught me at a very young age the value of a dollar,? Michael added.

Like parents, like son: In college Michael started a mail-order company that sold craft supplies. After college he turned the business over to his mother (his parents were divorced by then) and went to law school, vowing never to return to New Hampshire ? or the craft industry.

However, during law school, and later business school, Michael continually gave his mother advice on running the company. ?I still insisted I wouldn?t return,? Michael remembers, ?but I never really let go, either.?

But shortly after 9/11, Michael and his then fianc?e decided to return to New Hampshire. He began managing the business with his mother, Judy Joyce, thinking it would be a two- or three-year adventure.

Challenges lay ahead, however. Stenciling had declined, and Michael made a major change: He transformed it into a paper craft and scrapbook company, and renamed it Momenta.

Marriage, two kids, and 11 years later, Michael is still running the company. Judy worked with Michael for about four years, during which time the company?s sales tripled, so she felt the company was in good hands and she could retire and follow her dream: Today Judy is a Peace Corp volunteer in Dominica. Will a third generation eventually take over?

It?s a little early to tell. Michael?s son Max is six and daughter Brea is three, but Max is interested. Michael has already taken Max to a Jo-Ann store, pointed out the Momenta stickers, and explained how they got there.

?I discuss business with him fairly regularly,? Michael said. ?He is always very interested and I enjoy discussing it with him, although I leave out the more ?difficult? parts of running a company,? Michael added with a smile.

Reforms create competitive House races in Calif.

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) ? Democratic Rep. Pete Stark, the longest-serving member of California's largest-in-the-nation congressional delegation, offered a taste of his trademark invective.

"It's a question of choosing experience, or a novice who likes to lie," Stark told the crowd of Democratic attorneys on a recent afternoon, as the sweet smell of ribs wafted from the buffet at a barbeque house along Oakland's waterfront.

The 80-year-old Stark is used to coasting to re-election in the liberal enclave of the San Francisco Bay area he has represented since the end of the Vietnam War. Legislative gerrymandering and California's primary system virtually ensured that he would emerge victorious in November.

All that has changed this year, as Californians deal with two major political reforms that are remaking the congressional landscape and creating competitive races for the first time in decades. The results are a long list of up-for-grab seats, once-safe incumbents fighting for their political lives and tens of millions of dollars in campaign spending.

For the Democrats, California is one of three states ? New York and Illinois are the others ? that hold the most promise of significant gains that could help them reduce the GOP majority in the House. Winning the House outright still remains a tough haul despite better numbers nationwide for President Barack Obama.

For Republicans, California is a chance to keep Democrats in check.

Stark is a 19-term incumbent squeezed by the two political reforms ? an independent citizens panel that redrew the congressional boundaries and a new primary system that sends the top two vote-getters to the general election regardless of party affiliation. Both changes were approved by voters in recent years.

Not only is Stark in a newly drawn district in which many voters are unfamiliar with him, but his general election opponent is a fellow Democrat who finished a close second in the June primary. The congressman has acknowledged that even he can no longer go on autopilot if he hopes to win re-election.

Stark's challenger, Eric Swalwell, a 31-year-old prosecutor for the Alameda County District Attorney's Office, casts himself as a native son of Stark's new district, which was redrawn to include more moderate, inland suburbs south and east of Oakland, which is no longer in the district. For years, Stark has lived in Maryland's Chesapeake Bay region and flies back to California for town halls and other events.

"I played soccer on all the ball fields in this district. I've worked as a prosecutor in all these courts and have worked with regional governments as a councilman," Swalwell, a member of the Dublin City Council, said in an interview. "I'm basically running against a ghost who has been in hiding and doesn't even come out here to defend his record."

While Stark is challenged by both of California's new political reforms, which are taking effect on a statewide basis for the first time, the outcome of that race will not change the makeup of Congress. The Stark-Swalwell race is one of eight same-party runoffs this fall caused by the top-two primary.

Independent redistricting has created competition between Democrats and Republicans in about a dozen other races, contests that could help alter the House this year or in 2014.

"California is really the central battleground for the future of control of the House," said Dan Conston, a spokesman for the Congressional Leadership Fund, a super PAC aligned with House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, that supports GOP candidates. "The battlefield doesn't look anything like what Democrats hoped it was going to look like."

Democrats, however, say independent redistricting has worked against Republicans in a state where the GOP has only about 30 percent of registered voters. Democrats also are trying to wrest seats from several Republican incumbents, including Rep. Mary Bono Mack, who represents a Southern California desert district that runs through Palm Springs.

Her challenger, Democrat Raul Ruiz, is a physician with support from a political action committee led by House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif.

Democrats hold every statewide office in California and the two U.S. Senate seats and have majorities in both houses of the Legislature. They also hold a registration edge of 2.2 million voters over Republicans, and independents outnumber Republicans in about a dozen congressional districts.

The Legislature's gerrymander of legislative and congressional districts after the 1990 census cemented Democratic control of the Assembly and Senate while protecting incumbents of both parties.

Between 2000 and 2010, just one House seat changed party hands, when Rep. Jerry McNerney won a seat in the agriculture-heavy Central Valley from former GOP Rep. Richard Pombo.

Now even the contours of McNerney's district have changed, and he faces a tough campaign against Republican challenger Ricky Gill, a 25-year-old law school graduate whom national Republicans consider one of their top hopes for defeating a Democratic incumbent.

Gill, who netted a short speaking slot at the Republican National Convention in Tampa, Fla., has snagged endorsements from former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush and South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley. He also has proved an effective fundraiser, bringing in nearly $1.8 million in campaign cash, some of it thanks to his parents' connections in California's growing Indian-American community. McNerney has raised about $1.5 million.

Their race for the 9th Congressional District is partly within the Sacramento television market, which is commanding much of the spending this year because it touches numerous competitive districts.

One of those is the seat now held by Republican Rep. Dan Lungren, a former state attorney general who faces a Democratic challenger, physician Ami Bera, whom he barely defeated two years ago.

Another is the race involving incumbent Democratic Rep. John Garamendi, who is competing in a much less favorable district than the one that elected him. His opponent, Republican Kim Vann, is a member of a farming and ranching family stretching back four generations in the heart of the new district, north of Sacramento.

Vann said Garamendi still behaves as if he were trying to win over progressive voters in his old San Francisco Bay area district rather than reaching out to families in rural Colusa County.

"This is my home. I'm not running around looking for a seat to shop," she said. "All you have to do is look at his voting record and look at the needs of the people in this district, and they don't match up."

Garamendi, who has held state and federal political offices for nearly four decades, said he was confident voters recognized his service to the area. He said Vann is relying on "shadowy" super PACs to fund a flurry of negative TV ads against him.

"In a normal campaign, you would be looking at a million-dollar congressional race," Garamendi said. "But with what amounts to unlimited funding, they are buying up television time starting in August. And a million-dollar television buy in Sacramento means you're basically on every commercial break."

In Southern California, Democratic-leaning super PACs have spent about $750,000 to support state Assemblywoman Julia Brownley, who faces a tight race against Republican state Sen. Tony Strickland in the 26th District along the Ventura County coastline. Democrats have just a 4 percentage point advantage.

Democratic incumbent Rep. Lois Capps is facing the toughest race of her political career in a newly drawn district along California's central coast that includes Santa Barbara and San Luis Obispo. Former state Sen. Abel Maldonado, a wealthy farmer, is mounting a spirited challenge in a district that is nearly evenly divided between Democrats and Republicans.

Independents account for about 1 in 5 voters in both of those districts and are seen as key for each of the campaigns.

Having such a large number of congressional districts in play has attracted far more money to California than in years past.

The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, House Democrats' official campaign arm, had reserved more than $8 million on broadcast and cable TV in the state as of Sept. 21, compared with $1.6 million last cycle, spokeswoman Jennifer Crider said.

In that same period, Republicans had reserved $7.6 million for five California races, $5.4 million for the Sacramento market alone.

Super PACs from both sides already had spent nearly $3 million on California's congressional races, ranking the state behind only Texas and Indiana for independent expenditures for state congressional contests through the end of June, according to MapLight, a nonpartisan group that analyzes money's role in politics.

EU wants $12 billion trade sanctions on U.S. in Boeing row

GENEVA (Reuters) - The European Union has asked the World Trade Organization (WTO)for the right to impose annual trade sanctions worth up to $12 billion on the United States in retaliation for illegal U.S. subsidies to planemaker Boeing .

The EU request is the latest legal move in the world's biggest trade dispute. The wrangling over subsidies given to Boeing and its European rival Airbus stretches back more than seven years.

"This follows the EU's assessment that the United States had not lived up to its obligation to remove its illegal subsidies in the aircraft sector, as required by the WTO rulings that clearly condemned U.S. subsidies to Boeing," the EU said in a statement.

The figure of $12 billion was "based on estimates of the damage suffered by the EU due to unfair and biased competition from the U.S. industry", it added.

Airbus, which is owned by aerospace group EADS , said the figure was justified by the WTO's finding that the effect of the "particularly pervasive" subsidies was significantly larger than their face value. It also said that the launch of Boeing's 787 aircraft would not have been possible without illegal subsidies.

"It is the largest WTO penalty ever requested and it follows the worst loss a party has seen in the history of the WTO," Airbus said in a statement.

In two parallel legal disputes, the WTO has ruled that both companies have received billions of dollars in illegal subsidies to support their large civil aircraft programs.

In Boeing's case, the deadline for the United States to comply with the WTO ruling was last Sunday, but the EU has rejected U.S. assurances that the handouts have stopped.

The European demand for sanctions mirrors a U.S. claim to the right to impose up to $10 billion of sanctions on the EU. [ID:nL2E8EU3A7]

Both claims are effectively frozen until other legal avenues have been exhausted, and many experts expect the two sides will settle the dispute outside the courtroom rather than let the tit-for-tat litigation drag on for years.

"We regret that Boeing continues a legal battle that should have long been resolved by a mutual agreement. We made offers time and again but are ready to fight it through if the other side wishes to do so," Airbus spokeswoman Maggie Bergsma said.

There was no immediate reaction from the U.S. Trade Representative's office. However, U.S. Ambassador to the WTO Michael Punke, speaking to reporters in Geneva on Wednesday, said the EU was much more at fault than the United States.

"Here is the key figure to keep in mind, for those who are keeping score at home on the Boeing-Airbus discussion: through the WTO dispute resolution process there have been identified $19 billion of illegal financing by Airbus. The equivalent number that has been identified for Boeing is $3-4 billion. So that's the starting point for our discussion," Punke said.

"Beyond that, it is very much our contention that many of the types of subsidies that have been identified in the European context are very much still at play, including, for example, in the launch of the (Airbus) A350 and the A380."

The Happy Entrepreneur (by Paul W. Smith)

037-Steve Jobs Happy Face-1

I?ve asked myself the following question literally hundreds of times.? There are stacks of books with entrepreneurial stories, books about the life of Bill Gates, Steve Jobs, Larry Ellison, et al.? We know these guys are driven, talented, obsessed, ruthless, workaholic and a little bit lucky (see, e.g., How to Spot an Entrepreneur).? We envy them and even try to model our lives after them, but why?? What makes them happy?

A passion for the pinnacle of money, power and prestige could be a good answer, but surely these high achievers know that someone always comes along to nudge you off the platform.? Consider Bill Gates; in an astonishing display of fiscal virility, he rented the entire Hawaiian island of Lanai for his wedding to Melinda.? One would assume this was a happy occasion, as they are still husband and wife after 18 years.? Bill set a new standard for opulence, until billionaire Larry Ellison came along and bought Lanai outright.? Larry has not been forthcoming about his intentions for the purchase (to date, he has been married and divorced four times).?

It is worthwhile to remember that ?happiness? is much more than a new-age, feel-good buzzword sparring with ?balanced?, ?centered? and ?good karma? in the titles of bestsellers and self-improvement workshops.? America?s founders trusted Thomas Jefferson with drafting the first version of the Declaration of Independence, and his second sentence is one of the most elegant and profound ever written.? There is more to this journey than just life and liberty from British rule, Jefferson wrote.? It is also about pursuing happiness.?

Although this happiness thing is in our mission statement, it has proven elusive.? In 1988, Bobby McFerrin promoted a two step process, the first of which was ?Don?t worry.?? Whether or not it worked, it made Bobby a lot of money.? History is unclear on how happy he was.

Politicians routinely ask if we are better off now than we were four years ago.? Numbers are tallied and scrutinized.? How much do we earn?? How many new homes are we building?? How many iPhone5?s were sold in the first 24 hours?? It?s been over 200 years since Jefferson suggested happiness as one of the key metrics of the American experiment and the government still hasn?t found a good way to measure it.?

The traditional metric for happiness has been the GDP per capita, a number representing the total value of goods and services produced in the country per unit human.? This presumed surrogate for standard of living only works if making and using stuff leads us to happiness.? According to the CIA (one of several agencies which tabulate GDP data) the top three countries in the world in this category are Monaco, Liechtenstein and Luxembourg.? The U.S. is in the 19th spot.?

?We love to talk about people who are poor but happy and rich people who are probably miserable, but what?s the real story?? The polling gurus at Gallup took it straight to the source, surveying folks directly to ask just how happy they really are.? The results show the top three happiest countries are Denmark, Finland and Norway.? On this list the U.S. ranks 11th, just ahead of Costa Rica.

The confusing message in this data has not gone unnoticed.? Americans are kicking butt on Life and Liberty, but two out of three is just not good enough.? Inquiring minds need to know; are we happy??

There?s a saying in engineering ? ?You can?t control it if you can?t measure it.?? Vermont, Maryland, Seattle, Somerville, Wisconsin and California?s Nevada City are just a few of the states and cities that are developing measures of happiness. ?The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services is working on an official index.? This stuff we keep getting more of, is it really the right stuff?? What if economic growth is harming the environment without improving the real quality of life?

For many pragmatists the whole idea of happiness is just too ?fluffy?.? Work hard, stay focused, count your blessings, and be thankful you?re not living in a poor country like the tiny South Asian nation of Bhutan, where the average life expectancy is 67 years and annual income is $2000.?

Back in 1972, the King of Bhutan, sensing that money and happiness were not well correlated, called for a Gross National Happiness index.? National policies based on the GNH limit tourism, ban tobacco, and keep motorists away from town centers every Tuesday.? The 7 million people of Bhutan are warm, friendly, and measurably happier than they were 40 years ago.?

You don?t have to travel to Bhutan to see that GDP per capita is leaving out something important.? At the beginning of his Presidential campaign in 1968, Senator Robert Kennedy said the GDP?

"...does not allow for the health of our children, the quality of their education or the joy of their play. It does not include the beauty of our poetry or the strength of our marriages ? it measures everything in short, except that which makes life worthwhile."

It is tempting to think of ?The Happy Entrepreneur? as a risk taker who has put up big numbers.? Perhaps the definition should be revised to look more like this;

entrepreneur [ahn-truh-pruh-noor] noun; an enterprising individual who builds happiness through risk and initiative, accepting full responsibility for the outcome.

As citizens of this great country we are entitled, in fact we are expected, to pursue happiness. ?Soon the Federal Government will be telling us exactly how happy we really are.? Once that happens, things are bound to get better.

Don?t worry.

Mitt Romney: 'Pleased With Some Polls, Less So With Other Polls'

ABC News' Michael Falcone reports:

On the same day that polls in two key battleground states - Ohio and Florida - showed President Obama growing his lead over Mitt Romney, the Republican presidential candidate acknowledged that he is "pleased with some polls, less so with other polls."

"Frankly at this early stage, polls go up, polls go down," Romney said in an interview on Wednesday with ABC's David Muir on the campaign trail in Toledo, Ohio.

Romney pointed to the first presidential debate - one week from tonight - as a potential turning point in the race.

"We have a chance during the debate to make our message clear to the American people," the former Massachusetts governor told Muir, "and I'm absolutely convinced that when people see the two of us talk about our direction for America they're going to support me because I know what it takes to make the economy going again, and the president has proven he does not."

Romney spoke to Muir at the end of his busiest day of campaigning in the Buckeye State in months. Romney held rallies in Westerville and Toledo and a manufacturing roundtable in Bedford Heights.

A New York Times-CBS News-Quinnipiac University poll out Wednesday morning found President Obama's edge over Romney in the crucial state growing to double digits, 53 percent to 43 percent. That's up from the president's 50 percent to 44 percent lead in a similar poll released on August 23.

In response to today's new numbers as well as a series of other public polls in the state, ABC News moved the state of Ohio, with its 18 electoral votes, from "Toss Up" territory to "Lean Obama."

But Romney said he was not deterred.

"I'm tied in the national polls, both Gallup and Rasmussen have the numbers at even," he told ABC News. "State by state you've got some advertising going on from the Obama people , which expresses their views on my positions which frankly, I think are inaccurate, and in some cases, dishonest."

In the interview, Romney declined to respond directly to the voices of critics, some from within his own party, who have been urging him to shift his strategy after several trying weeks for his campaign.

"There are critics and there are cheerleaders, we have people of all different persuasion," Romney said, noting that "every day there are improvements and new messages that come out."

"What the president said just the other day about 'bumps in the road' with regards to the events in the Middle East," he added. "That obviously was a whole new area to be discovered and discussed."

The Republican presidential hopeful was making his way across the state on the same day that President Obama campaigned at two Ohio colleges - Bowling Green State University and Kent State University. At those events the president did not miss an opportunity to refer to the comments made by Romney in a hidden camera video released last week showing the GOP candidate saying that "47 percent" of the American people are dependent upon government and would not vote for him.

Romney said he will be offering a different message to voters in the battleground states he will be visiting between now and Election Day.

"Mine is a campaign about 100 percent of the people, not 99 and one, not any other percent," Romney said. "It's about getting 100 percent of the people in this country to have a brighter future, better job prospects and higher take home pay."

And responding to his wife, Ann's recent comments to an Iowa radio station that running a presidential campaign "is hard" and that fellow Republicans should not be too quick to criticize her husband, Romney called her a "very strong character."

"She doesn't like it when people go after me, but I'm just fine. I got broad shoulders, and I'm happy to fend off the attacks that come my way," Romney told Muir. "And frankly, all of this is diversion from what the people of America care about. What they want to know is, who's going to make their life better, who's going to make sure we have more jobs, who's going to make sure we have more take home pay, who's going to keep America strong abroad?"

Mr. Sexy Back tries to bring Myspace back

(AP) ? "Who am I to say I want you back? When you were never mine to give away."

Those are the opening lines of a song that accompanies a "New Myspace" promotional video. The once-mighty social network is trying to stage yet another comeback with the help of Justin Timberlake. The new site, for which people can request an invitation, looks a bit like an entertainment-focused version of Pinterest, with a dash of Twitter and Facebook thrown in.

But Myspace has tried redesigns before, to no avail. Will it work this time?

"If you break my heart a second time, I might never be the same," continues the song, "Heartbeat," by the group JJAMZ.

From the sound if it, Myspace wants to win the hearts and minds of tech-savvy hipsters. Founded in 2003 and initially a fast-rising star, Myspace attracted mostly teenagers and twentysomethings, offering them a place to express themselves online. It peaked in 2008 with some 76 million U.S. visitors in October. The site lost its footing as the fun of customizing profile pages began to bore its users and the site's heavy use of banner advertisements slowed the speed at which pages loaded. At the same time, people were already migrating to Facebook, which counted users 35 and older among its fastest-growing demographic.

The company's new promotional video offers a 2-minute and 18-second peek into a slick, image-heavy site. The site's much cleaner look is a stark contrast to the old Myspace, which users often derided as messy and cluttered. Posted this week, the video promises that Myspace will start "totally from scratch," as if trying to shed its former self. It doesn't say when the new site will launch, only that it's "not ready quite yet."

The new Myspace will let users connect to the site with their Twitter or Facebook accounts, a sign that it won't be competing with those sites as a social networking service. Rather, Myspace will continue with its entertainment focus, as a place to play and discover music, add photos, videos and playlists and connect with artists.

Timberlake, who's featured prominently in the video, will likely play a big part of the MySpace revamp. The former 'N Sync pop star, with a group of other investors, bought MySpace last summer from News Corp. for $35 million, mostly in stock. That was quite a difference from the $580 million that News Corp. paid for the company in 2005, when it was still an Internet darling.

MySpace, of course, isn't Timberlake's first foray into social networking. He played Napster co-founder Sean Parker, a party animal and early Facebook adviser, in Aaron Sorkin's "The Social Network" in 2010.

In August this year, research firm comScore put Myspace's monthly unique visitors at 28 million, making it the 43rd most visited Web property in the U.S. It's behind the likes of not just Google, Facebook and Twitter but startups such as Tumblr, along with the reviews site Yelp and WebMD.

"The new design certainly looks beautiful and it could certainly spur a lot of initial interest," said Clark Fredericksen, spokesman for research firm eMarketer, which used to put out ad revenue estimates for MySpace but no longer does. "But there are going to be significant challenges for any company looking to enter the digital music space. You have a lot of entrenched players who are really successful."

Those players include Spotify, Pandora, Rdio, not to mention Apple Inc.'s iTunes.

There's also the mobile question. It's unclear from the video what plans the new MySpace has for mobile devices such as Android smartphones, iPhones and tablet computers. Fredricksen points out that cloud-based music ? streamed over an Internet connection ? is shifting toward the mobile platform primarily. We are all on the go with our music. MySpace is entering a crowded market here, too.

Representatives for Specific Media, which owns Myspace, did not return messages for comment Wednesday. Timberlake's publicist also did not return an email for comment. With only the slick demo and the poppy, bittersweet lyrics of the JJAMZ song to offer details about the "New Myspace", these lines stand out:

"Maybe I'm ashamed to want you back. Maybe I'm afraid, you'll never stay."

Man, as if a huge cheating scandal isn’t embarrassment enough. As if cheating with a married man isn’t bad enough. Now there are rumors that the real reason for Kristen Stewart’s infidelity is because…Robert Pattinson is bad in bed. Oh, snap!! Oh my, poor Robert. He looks like a damn fool. He has gotten back with Kristen after this disgusting scandal (I’m sorry I hate cheaters and I hate people who cheat with married men) and refused to talk about it to the press. Rob has taken the high road and things just keep popping up that make him look like a fool. Star magazine is reporting that Kristen was trash talking Rob to her friends claiming that he was bad in bed.   One source actually says Rob’s found out about this lil’ secret and now he’s super pissed. They say: “Rob couldn’t believe that Kristen was telling everyone that he’s bad in bed. Not only did she cheat on him, she humiliated him. Now that he?s heard about the rumors she’s been spreading, there’s no chance [of permanent reconciliation].”   Hello, Robert, you can have any lady in Hollywood. Why are you sticking with this chick? British Airways tests eliminating online check-in

It?s a familiar process to most air travelers by now: Watch the clock before your trip and log on to a computer within 24 hours of your flight to check in online. But even that simple routine, which has been a huge improvement over the previous tradition of standing in a long queue at the airport, might go away in the future ? something industry watchers say isn?t necessarily a plus.

Artists painting the Valley all week

Get set for the return of one of the most welcome yearly sights in Sonoma Valley: 39 talented artists from around the country, with easels set up and paints prepared, creating art from their splendid surroundings.

That?s right: Sonoma Plein Air will be back in town beginning Monday (10/1) and ending Saturday (10/6).

During this weeklong event, artists stay in private homes and spend much of their week painting in locations around the Valley, as well as participating in a variety of events.

Funds raised during the week help support art programs for Sonoma Valley youth. Since 2002 awards have gone to Dunbar, El Verano, Flowery, Prestwood, and Sassarini elementary schools, Altimira and Adele Harrison middle schools, and Sonoma Arts Guild. Sonoma Valley Museum of Art received support for the Arts Rewards the Students program. The Sonoma Community Center received funds for the ongoing art scholarship program and the scholarship program for high school students.

Events during Plein Air include:

  • ?Quick Draw? in Sonoma Plaza on Tuesday (10/2), 5:30 p.m. It?s free, and you can walk around watching the artists at work. They?ll have 1.5 hours to create their paintings, which will be available for purchase from 6:30-8:30 p.m.
  • The Art Exhibition & Sale at Sonoma Plaza on Saturday (10/6), 10 a.m.-3 p.m. You?ll be able to talk to the artists, view the works they created during the week (and make a purchase, if you desire). US, Egypt seek better ties after embassy protests

NEW YORK (AP) ? The United States and Egypt sought Monday to repair ties strained severely by a year-and-a-half of rapid change in the Middle East, culminating in the last two weeks with Egyptian demonstrators overrunning the U.S. Embassy in Cairo and President Barack Obama candidly remarking that the two countries were now neither enemies nor allies.

Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton spoke with Egypt's new Islamist president, Mohammed Morsi, in a New York hotel on Monday night, the highest-level meeting between the once stalwart Middle East partners since an American-made video ridiculing Islam prompted violent Egyptian protests on the anniversary of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks. American officials said their discussions sought to strengthen a relationship that both see as vital.

They particularly emphasized the importance of ensuring the security of diplomatic installations, said a senior U.S. official, who wasn't authorized to speak publicly about the private meeting and requested anonymity. Morsi was criticized for his slow, initial response to the protests that ended with vandalism of the embassy and the American flag torn down, but the official stressed that U.S. officials see the Egyptian government's protection since as reassuring.

Morsi assured Clinton that embassy protection was "Egypt's duty," the official said.

The meeting occurred amid a jam-packed schedule for Clinton in New York, where she is attending this week's annual gathering of the U.N. General Assembly and speaking with a host of world leaders. Egyptian hopes of a maiden meeting between Morsi and Obama were dashed when the White House announced that the president would not be participating in bilateral meetings during his brief stay in the city. Obama arrived Monday and will leave Tuesday.

Shortly after the Cairo protests, Obama appeared to express his dismay with Egypt's handling of the situation. In an interview with Spanish-language network Telemundo, he said: "I don't think that we would consider them an ally, but we don't consider them an enemy."

The nature of the U.S.-Egyptian relationship wasn't under question in Clinton's meeting with Morsi, said the U.S. official, who said that officials for the two countries see relations as having have moved past the place they were only 12 days ago.

Clinton and Morsi also spoke about improving security in the Sinai Peninsula near Israel's border and helping the Egyptian economy, officials said.

Extremist activity has grown in the Sinai since last year's political upheaval, which ended with the ouster of longtime U.S. ally Hosni Mubarak. The volatile region, which links Egypt's borders with the Gaza Strip and Israel, has become increasingly lawless. In a brazen attack in August, unidentified militants killed 16 Egyptian soldiers.

Clinton stressed the need for Egypt to improve communications with its neighbor Israel, the official said.

The neighbors established a close counterterrorism partnership under Mubarak, but relations have dipped since. Members of Morsi's Muslim Brotherhood have expressed skepticism about the merits of Egypt's three-decade old peace treaty with Israel, and the Jewish state has viewed with great suspicion the political rise of Morsi and other hardline Islamists.
