New Scottish cancer system rolled out

A?chemotherapy electronic prescribing system that allows patients? treatment records to be shared by the multidisciplinary care team has gone live in Scotland.

Ewan Morrison, associate director of pharmacy (acute services) at Edinburgh Royal Infirmary, said pharmacy has played a key part in the system?s implementation, which is another step towards rolling out electronic prescribing across NHS Scotland.

The ChemoCare system, or "CEPAS", which has now been introduced across all three of Scotland?s cancer networks, means that designated members of the team can now access the treatment record from any part of a patient?s care pathway.

The system also includes details about a patient?s individual schedule for chemotherapy, which means that appointments can be made to match a patient?s prescribed cycle of treatment.

Mr Morrison told The Journal: "CEPAS is already optimising the safe clinical delivery and cost-effective use of chemotherapy for adult patients. It also facilitates local access to treatments in a country with a widely spread and rural population.

"In addition, CEPAS will support modernisation of the pharmaceutical care pathway, improve quality of care and provide a mechanism for the analysis of patient and treatment data."

Val Doherty, clinical director for the cancer network in South East Scotland, said the initiative represents a significant change in practice, and will "help offset the challenges of increasing cancer incidence and the introduction of new, more complex chemotherapy regimens".
