Victoria Advocate | Rec Room column: Spring sports season is upon ...

Spring is right around the corner, and with it comes the start of another sports season in Victoria.

The city of Victoria adult softball and kickball registration opens soon.

Whether you are a serious competitor or simply want to get involved in a recreational team sport, the spring league has something for you. The Adult Kickball League offers both coed competitive and coed recreational teams. The Adult Softball League offers men's competitive, men's recreation, coed competitive and coed recreation teams. Recreation leagues are for teams that want to play for fun. Even though these teams compete against each other, the recreational leagues cater to the more novice players. Games are played at the Adult Softball Complex, 510 Proctor St., in Victoria.

The cost to register a team is $300. The season is an eight-game season culminating in a double-elimination tournament. Teams can register at the Parks and Recreation office in Riverside Park, 476 McCright Drive. Visa/Mastercard/Discover cards are accepted as well as checks payable to city of Victoria. Registration begins Jan. 22. The office is open 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. Registration closes at 7 p.m Feb. 15. Feb. 18 and Feb. 19 will be considered late registration and will include an additional $25 late registration fee. No registrations can be accepted after Feb. 19 to allow time to properly schedule games.

Adult softball and kickball manager meetings are scheduled for Feb. 20 and 21. A representative of each team must attend one of these meetings. These meetings are designed to provide a forum for communicating the league rules and guidelines as they pertain to each sport as well as offer an opportunity for managers to gain answers to their questions. Complete team rosters must be turned in prior to the start of the first game.

Games begin March 4.

The softball and kickball rules are listed on our website at the city of Victoria website and the Victoria Parks and Recreation Department website.

The Adult Softball Leagues follow Amateur Softball Association of America rules and are overseen by ASA umpires. All leagues are registered with the Texas Amateur Athletic Federation. If you or someone you know is interested in becoming an umpire, please contact Recreation Specialist MicKayla Padilla at mpadilla@victoriatx.org or 361-485-3200.

If you are looking for an opportunity for children to play softball or baseball, the Victoria Girls Softball Association and the Victoria Little League offers leagues at the Youth Sports Complex, 105 N. Ben Wilson St., in Victoria.

The Victoria Girls Softball Association will hold spring registration at the Victoria Mall on the following dates and times:

Saturday: 10 a.m.-3 p.m.

Jan. 26: 10 a.m.-3 p.m.

Jan. 31: 6:30 p.m.-8:30 p.m.

Feb. 2: 10 a.m.-3 p.m.

The Victoria Little League will hold spring registrations at the Victoria Mall on the following dates and times:

Saturday: 10 a.m.-4 p.m.

Jan. 26: 10 a.m.-4 p.m.

Feb. 2: 10 a.m.-4 p.m.

Baseball is also offered at the Challenged Athletes Dream Complex in Riverside Park. The Victoria Little League sponsors a Challenger League, which is for children up until they graduate high school. Registration for the Challenger League runs concurrent with Little League registration at the Victoria Mall. An adult league is also available at the Challenged Athletes Dream Complex. It starts in early April and runs through mid to late May.

There is no registration for this adult league. The athletes just need to show up, and they can play. For information on the adult league at the Challenged Athletes Dream Complex, contact Anthony Jung at 361-573-7068.

As you can see, there are opportunities for everyone to get out and play ball in Victoria. We hope you enjoy the spring season.
