Is there a link between heart disease and prostate cancer?? That?s a question that?s been bouncing around for some time.? Research done to date now suggested there may be,? but results of various studies have been conflicting.
Now, the link appears to be confirmed.? According to the latest study by the Duke Cancer Institute there is a significant connection between heart disease and prostate cancer.? The implication is that the two diseases may have the same causes.? If further research shows that both heart disease and prostate cancer have the same triggers, it could mean that it is possible for men to reduce their risk of prostate cancer by making proven lifestyle changes in fighting heart disease.? Meaning improving diet, quit smoking, reducing cholesterol levels and doing more exercise.
The study led by Dr. Stephen Freedland, an associate professor of surgery and pathology in the Division of Urology at Duke, can be seen online in the February Issue of the Journal Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers & Prevention. Dr. Freedland s;ays, ?It?s not like every man in the study with heart disease had cancer, but we can say that clearly if you have heart disease, your risk of prostate cancer is higher.?
This Duke study enrolled 6,400 men. Of those? 547 reported a history of heart disease at the time they were enrolled.
It?s important to note that results in this study simply shows a link between the two diseases?with data drawn from an unrelated drug trial.? That means more research is still needed to draw the conclusion that somehow heart disease can cause prostate cancer.
