Samsung announces 1.4GHz Exynos 4 Quad as basis for Galaxy S3

Samsung announces 1.4GHz Exynos 4 Quad as basis for Galaxy S3

Looking for something a bit more solid than a third-party benchmark? We can do that. "Already in production the Exynos 4 Quad is scheduled to be adopted first into Samsung's next Galaxy smartphone that will officially be announced in May," the horse's mouth reveals. Samsung boasts that the new 32nm 1.4GHz quad-core processor flaunts twice the processing power over its predecessor, thanks to its High-K Metal Gate (HKMG) low-power technology. The net energy savings? About 20-percent. "The application processor is a crucial element in providing our customers with a PC-like experience on mobile devices," explains Hankil Yoon, Senior VP of Product Strategy Team at Samsung, "Samsung's next Galaxy device, which will be officially announced soon, offers uncompromised performance and ground breaking multitasking features, thanks to Exynos 4 Quad's powerful performance and efficient energy management technology." Sammy says it's shopping the new processor around to other handset manufacturers (like Meizu), noting that the Exynos 4 Quad is pin-to-pin compatible with the Exynos 4 Dual (the brains behind the Galaxy S II and Note), which gives designers the ability to update product designs with minimal costs. Check out Samsung's full press release after the break.

MIT gets musical with Arduino-powered DrumTop, uses household objects as a source of sound

Image

Everyone's favorite microcontroller has been a boon among hobbyists and advanced amateurs, but it's also found a home among the brilliant projects at MIT's Media Lab, including a groovy instrument called DrumTop. This modern take on the drum pad delivers Arduino-powered interactivity in its simplest form -- hands-on time with ordinary household objects. Simply place a cup, or a plastic ball, even a business card on the DrumTop to make your own original music.

The prototype on display today includes eight pads, which are effectively repurposed speakers that tap objects placed on top, with an FSR sensor recognizing physical pressure and turning it into a synchronized beat. There's also a dial in the center that allows you to speed up or slow down the taps, presenting an adjustable tempo. DrumTop is more education tool than DJ beat machine, serving to teach youngsters about the physical properties of household objects, be it a coffee mug, a CD jewel case or a camera battery. But frankly, it's a lot of fun for folks of every age. There's no word on when you might be able to take one home, so for now you'll need to join us on our MIT visit for a closer look. We make music with all of these objects and more in the video after the break.

Zuck?s So Busy Buying Billion $ Companies, Facebook May Delay IPO. And That?s Good.

A Tale Of Two ZuckerbergsWould you prefer a CEO who's in the trenches making their company worth more, or one who sings and dances for potential investors? In Facebook's case, having Mark Zuckerberg remain the visionary rather than become a celebrity salesman will be crucial to the company staying on top.?Zuckerberg's steered Facebook around so many pitfalls. And his dedication to the product is so inspiring to his employees that the social network risks disruption and demoralization if the IPO attempts to sew a business suit on the hoodie-clad 27 year old. Now CNBC reports that Zuckerburg has been so busy running the company and making huge acquisitions like the $1 billion+ buy of Instagram that it could force Facebook to delay its IPO from the May 17th date we've heard from multiple sources, to late May or even early June. The pre-IPO roadshow would have to be pushed back as well. Potential investors might groan, but one day they might be smiling all the way to the bank.

AOL Sells Patents to Microsoft

AOL Inc. agreed Monday to sell more than 800 patents and related applications, along with a nonexclusive license to its remaining portfolio of patents, to Microsoft Corp. for about $1.1 billion.

The news sent AOL shares surging as the online media company said it intends to return a "significant portion" of the sale proceeds to shareholders. The deal comes six weeks after activist shareholder Starboard Value LP, which is mounting a proxy contest for seats on AOL's board, highlighted AOL's patent portfolio as an "underutilized" asset and complained that the company wasn't acting to realize value from the patents.

Brian Kelsey: Refinishing Kitchen Cabinets - US Mag - The Breaking ...

You love your kitchen, but not your kitchen cabinets. It?s a common problem and one that can be solved in one weekend! How? By simply painting them, and updating the hardware.

The first step is to asses the condition of your cabinetry, and what it is made from. Most cabinets are made from solid wood, or plywood, both of which can be painted or stained. Some cabinets are covered in melamine which is sort of like plastic, and won?t take paint well.

You?ll first want to remove the doors, and all hardware. If you plan on reusing your hardware, you can soak the hinges in ammonia and water, and scrub with a toothbrush, then rinse with clean water.

Wipe everything down, to get rid of the grease and grime.

Sand the doors thoroughly with 120 grit sandpaper. NOTE: You don?t need to sand down to the bare wood if you plan on painting the cabinets (as opposed to staining them). The key here, is to simply rough up the surface, so the primer will have something to stick to.

Now you can sand the cabinet carcasses. The carcass is basically the kitchen cabinets without the doors. While you will need to sand the faceframe for sure (faceframe is the solid wood frame attached to the front of the carcass), painting the insides of the cabinetry is completely up to you. Again, we are only sanding the rough up the surface.

Once the everything is primed, you?ll lightly sand with 220 grit sandpaper.

Vacuum and wipe clean, then apply two topcoats. I like to use a semi-gloss finish, as it cleans nicely. You can use a brush or roller, or if you want an ultra smooth finish, use a paint spray gun. You can buy or rent one, just follow the directions closely and do test areas first. Once you are set up, you can spray all the doors at once in no time.

Once everything is dry, re-install old (or new) hardware, and just like that you have transformed your kitchen cabinets for very little time and money!
