Have You Seen My Roots?: Labor in our Family Tree

Be thankful we live today. ?The term "labor" certainly isn't what it used to be. ?I come from coal miners and teachers. ?My husband from farmers mostly, but also cheese makers, woodworkers, and my father-in-law was a truck driver.

To be a coal miner...well, I don't really like thinking about it too much. ?Always wondering if your husband and sons come home that night? ?If they came home, would they be broken and able to continue working? ?I can't imagine sending my young sons off to work in the coal mines, but that's what my ancestors did. ?Boys went to work in the mines as soon as they were able. ?Girls helped mom raise the babies and do the housework (which was a LOT harder than today). ?They had gardens and chickens in their yards to help feed their families. ?They made their own clothes and had few tech-gadgets to make their lives easier.

I know my ancestors worked hard and hoped that some day their children wouldn't have to work in the mines. Around the turn of the century that started to happen and my grandparents and great aunts and uncles more often became teachers.

One room schoolhouses. ?Teaching all grade levels at once, but eventually schools changed and became more what I remember as a child and teenager. ?Teaching though is still a thankless job more often than not. ?Where would we be without our teachers? ?I get emails and comments about my grandfather and what a wonderful teacher ?and role model he was (and strict). ?I have obituaries that show how much my great aunt achieved in her lifetime and how respected she was (you can read about her here).

My father-in-law, like many truck drivers today spent the week driving and would come home on the weekends to see his family. ?His wife took care of their 5 children while he was away. ?Sacrifice and a strong and loving family. ?He worked for Schneider United. ?The "United" meant it was unionized. ?Schneider busted that union by hiring new truck drivers that would work for a little more money up front, no pensions and diminished benefits. ?They didn't fire the unionized drivers, they merely waited for them to retire. ?Now Schneider National stands in its place. ?Same company...less security for the drivers and their families. ?My father-in-law was able to retire comfortably and when he passed my mother-in-law was able to receive his pension and continue to live well.

As for the farmers in our family, well I can only imagine how difficult working on a farm must have been. ?I am so not a morning person and I can only imagine having to rise early to tend the crops and animals.

My ancestors (and yours as well, if they held many of these occupations) had something that helped them make ends meet. ?Helped them fight for better working conditions and to keep their children out of the dangerous mines. ?Had someone to speak for them so they weren't driving truck longer than was safe for them and others on the road. ?Someone that made sure that the teachers got the benefits they deserved for the hard work that they did...they had unions.

Labor Day hardly means what it once did. ?What it must have meant to our ancestors. ?Our ancestors that just wanted an honest day's wage for an honest day's labor. ?To be able to live in dignity and raise their families from what was frequently an impoverished and brutally hard life. ?Labor Unions fought for:

-Overtime pay

-A tolerable length for the work week and workday

-Minimum wage

-Paid vacation and sick days

-Safety standards

-Child Labor Laws

-Health benefits

-Retirement security

-Unemployment compensation

You would not have had Labor Day if there had not been unions. ?Unions pushed for a day to celebrate America's laborers. ?States passed laws marking the holiday, but it wasn't until August 28, 1893 that Labor Day became a National holiday. The word "union" and "unionized" seems to be the equivalent of a swear word today, but why? ?Some unions were corrupt, but it's up to the members to fix that. ?Not up to the employers and politicians to bust the unions that help keep our union workers safe and earning a decent wage.

I would not dishonor my ancestors to disparage what is a wonderful part of our American history. ?The Labor Union and Labor Day will always be connected. ?Even if people sometimes refuse to acknowledge the connection. ?Our ancestors changed this country so that their children and grandchildren would be able to live a better life than they did. ?Not a life of sloth as many wrongfully think of unionized labor, but an honest day's wage. ?An honest day's work.

Today I celebrate Labor Day and my ancestors that helped make working in America better for everyone. ?I will keep their hard work and intentions alive and I thank them for their sacrifices so that my life was better than theirs. ?May we always be a country that values it's workers.

ICE chief of staff resigns amid misconduct claims

(AP Photo/U.S. Department of Homeland Security)

(AP) ? A senior Obama administration political appointee and longtime aide to Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano resigned Saturday amid allegations of inappropriate sexual behavior lodged by at least three Immigration and Customs Enforcement employees.

Suzanne Barr, chief of staff to ICE Director John Morton, said in her resignation letter that the allegations against her are "unfounded." But she said she was stepping down anyway to end distractions within the agency. ICE, a division of the Homeland Security Department, confirmed Barr had resigned. The Associated Press obtained a copy of Barr's letter.

Barr is accused of sexually inappropriate behavior toward employees. The complaints are related to a sexual discrimination and retaliation lawsuit filed by a senior ICE agent in May.

In her letter to Morton, Barr said she has been the subject of "unfounded allegations designed to destroy my reputation" and is resigning "with great regret."

"Of greater concern however, is the threat these allegations represent to the reputation of this agency and the men and women who proudly serve their country by advancing ICE's mission," Barr wrote. "As such, I feel it is incumbent upon me to take every step necessary to prevent further harm to the agency and to prevent this from further distracting from our critical work."

Barr went on leave last month after the New York Post reported on the lawsuit filed by James T. Hayes Jr., ICE's special agent in charge in New York. Additional employees came forward with their allegations around the same time.

House Homeland Security Committee Chairman Peter King, R-N.Y., said in a statement Saturday that Barr's resignation "raises the most serious questions about management practices and personnel policies at the Department of Homeland Security." He said his committee will continue to review the case and personnel practices at DHS.

In one complaint, Barr is accused of telling a male subordinate he was "sexy" and asking a personal question about his anatomy during an office party. In a separate complaint, she is accused of offering to perform a sex act with a male subordinate during a business trip in Bogota, Colombia. She's also accused of calling a male subordinate from her hotel room and offering to perform a sex act. The names of two of Barr's accusers were censored in affidavits reviewed by AP.

Homeland Security's office of professional responsibility and inspector general have been investigating the allegations.

Prior to the lawsuit, there were no complaints about Barr, according to a homeland security official who spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak publicly about the matter.

In the lawsuit, Hayes described a "frat house" atmosphere at ICE designed to humiliate male employees under Barr's leadership. Hayes, who was transferred to New York from ICE headquarters in Washington, is asking for more than $4 million that, among other things, would cover compensation he believes he is owed for relocation expenses and financial losses associated with his transfer.

Hayes' lawyer, Morris Fischer of Silver Spring, Md., has declined to comment.

The Justice Department is seeking to dismiss Hayes' lawsuit on the basis that he did not state a claim for retaliation.

Barr, a 1995 graduate of the University of Arizona, was among Napolitano's first appointments after she became secretary in 2009. Barr started working for Napolitano in 2004, while Napolitano was governor of Arizona. Prior to that, Barr worked for Arizona Republican Sens. Jon Kyl and John McCain.

Five-Star Meals Around the Campfire - Food and Drink Digital

Source: Smoke Alarm Media

Boise, ID, September 02, 2012 --(PR.com)-- Smoke Alarm Media, after years of granola bars and trail mix, is drooling to announce the publication of the new camping cookbook ?In The Wild Chef,? by Stephen Weston.

It seems that many folks have done it. An epic hiking trip whose highlight was the grease fire that took out the tent. Or even worse, the camping trip that leaves one with a bi-lateral hernia from hefting a 60-pound cooler of ice and soggy bologna. And parents wonder why the kids aren?t eager for a two-week vacation to Yellowstone.

It?s appears time for a different way, and Stephen Weston thinks he has done it.

Stephen Weston has assembled, tested, retweeked, refined and completed what can casually be called a culinary bible for gourmet camping. In his latest book, ?In The Wild Chef,? Stephen offers a selection of over 130 recipes of unique tastes ranging from Thai curries to Italian desserts. According to Weston, these camping recipes are light to carry, extremely easy to cook and are guaranteed to banish GORP forever.

Weston has been an active camper and chef for over 30 years. Time spent in the Army introduced him to Meals Ready to Eat (MRE) that seemed to be three lies in one. And he knew there was a better way. Three years in making, his pi?ce de r?sistance was complete. Tested on mountaintops and hiking trails across the country and world, these recipes are the first to elevate campfire cooking from the mundane to magnificent. As he says "This is intended to rescue a favorite Scout, weekend camper, or Class 5 mountaineer from bad and boring food."

The Ups and Downs Of Franchising ? John Denton on Getting ...

It happened again recently! I was talking to a franchisee about her chances of selling her franchise business and she came out with the statement I hear so often from franchisees - ?If I could just get out of?my franchise?for what it cost me to get in to it, then I would be happy?.

I hear this so often from franchisees struggling to make a profit in their business. Often they are in a retail situation in a shopping centre. After a few years they realise that the only people making any money are the shopping centre owners and the franchisors. In effect, the franchisee is working to keep the shopping centre owners and franchisors in the lifestyle they have come to expect!

Unfortunately, once you are IN and have invested the money, it can be very difficult to get out and recover your costs. If the lease is in the franchisee?s name then you are stuck with that as well. If the lease is in the franchisor?s name, which it often is these days, then the franchisor may be able to terminate your franchise agreement for not meeting targets, put a manager in to the store to keep it running and protect the brand and then recruit a replacement franchisee to take over. The franchisor and their brand are well protected.

Look, I am not against franchises! There are some excellent franchise businesses out their and most franchisors will do the right thing by their franchisees! My point is though that people need to have their eyes open when considering a franchise and understand what they are getting in to.

When you get in to a franchise ? new or established;

(1) You are not buying a business! You are signing up to an agreement to operate a business for a ?term?. That means that you effectively have a license to operate one of the franchisor?s businesses for a period of time (the ?term?).

(2) There is no guarantee that your agreement will be renewed at the end of the ?term? or that you will be able to sell the business. READ THE AGREEMENT AND GET LEGAL ADVICE! Know what will happen at the end of the ?term? and what your options will be.

(3) No matter how well you build the business over the ?term? the client base (goodwill) belongs to the franchisor.

So, I always say??Find out how are you going to get out of it?before you get in to it.?

As I said above, there are some very good franchise operations in Australia and?we have such a strict Code of Conduct for Franchisors ? as part of the Trade Practices Act ? there is no excuse for a prospective franchisee NOT?having their eyes open before they sign up.

Always speak to existing franchisees and see how they are going, and if possible, franchisees who have left the franchise. Under the Act the franchisor must provide details in their disclosure document for you to do this.

Drama 9 Journal: Ensemble, roles, relationships and status. (Week 1 ...

?

This week, in our first few drama classes, we learned about roles & relationships, ensemble/improvisation, and status.

?

Our first drama class consisted of roles and relationships. We started off with a game of communication. In a group of 2 we had to form the object Mr.Meiklejohn would shout out? without using any form of speech. We tried hand movements, head nods and taking form of part of the object so the partner could finish the rest. This enabled us to gain trust in our partner and get to know the drama group. My partner (Louis) and I were very cooperative and had good use of communication which made us complete the task easily while understanding it?s purpose. The final exercise of the day was to introduce our partner on an online dating website, we exchanged our likes/ dislikes etc. One of the two performer would start by introducing partner 1 while partner 2 would wave to the audience and present their likes/dislikes by using once again anything other than speech e.g actions. We didn?t get a chance to perform because of the lack of time, but the point of the activity was to get to know the performers and, therefore we did not miss out on the assignment.

?

Our second drama class consisted of ensemble and improvisation. The meaning of ?Ensemble? in french is ?together? which gave a clear perspective about of our activity would consist of today; working together/engaging. On the other hand we also had to work together while improvising: making up the situation, characters/identity and motivation through the scene. We first chose our partner and worked different improvisations on each one another to test and get a feel of the task. Later we would group the class in circle and randomly choose different partners to perform with in the middle.Partner A would start the, partner B would engage, switch and so on. Although adding the principle of improvisation in made it a little more tricky, it also encouraged our creative thinking, self-confidence and decision making. My partner and I had a great social relationship in working as well as outside of class, there was easy engagement as well as communication and development of the scene. A few Problems I encountered were not revealing the opposite characters identity and also finishing the scene. I think I was to focused into balancing all elements (situation, characters and motivation) through the scene that i was only complicating the ending. When I had to chose the context of the scene, l avoided a complicated ending. In conclusion, a scene can be overall in control if the communication of a situation, character and motivation are clear and effective.

?

Our third drama class consisted of understanding status. A status is a social position or rank. In acting it is known as who is in control of the scene. Our first short preparative task was to? partner up, then make a Person A and Person B. Person A would wear the hat; this meant Person A belonged to a higher status while Person B belonged to a lower status. The only way Person B could possess the hat was by having Person A kneel down or lose their social ?strength? (crying, lower self-esteem etc). When practicing the task, most of our practice skits would start with obvious contrast between rich and poor e.g king and servant. Later the skits developed into Mother and child, to 2 of the same type of characters with the same age, sexe but different levels of confidence/attitude. For the final performance we were asked to pick a scene that had multiple change of status. At the end of our final class performance, my partner and I had performed a scene of a dog getting his fleas checked at the veterinary. What I liked in our roles was how even a dog can take status. It can be the least expected that make it so exciting also how discrete and subtle it underlined the meaning of status. It was a clever and indirect methods to achieve the task. What I think I could have improved was taking the hat faster away to claim my status.

A few things I took away from this weeks lesson were?

-Drama lets you explore various ways of communicating ideas in different and creative manner.

-A?successful performance consists of 3 main steps: identifying, communicating, creating.
