Winter football looking up in Australia - bring it on!

I didn't watch the State of Origin I rarely do.

?I've never watched the Brumbies despite being a passionate Canberran.? Rugby just doesn't do it for me.

?Football is my sport - my thing. So it is great relief that Aussie football returns after what seems like a huge break - well two weeks since the last ACL games.

?And better still this one is crucial.

Adelaide United at home to Josh Kennedy's Nagoya Grampus at Hindmarsh - Winner takes all and flies through to the next round.

The loser - well that's it.

?This is the type of football game I particularly love. Everything on the line. I'll be cheering long and loud for the Aussies and hope for once Josh Kennedy - if he plays - is on the losing side.

And then it's Denmark, and the real stuff begins. Other sports are seemingly well followed in Australia so they don't need me.

Asian Champions League followed by World Cup Qualifiers. Bring it on!

Bats: On the Ground Floor With Team Israel

The special assistant to the San Diego Padres? general manager fell asleep watching a game on his iPad last weekend. ?Extra innings,? Brad Ausmus, the special assistant, said, but he actually had a better excuse. He was watching the game in Israel.

Ausmus, who played 18 major league seasons as a catcher for four teams, is the manager for Israel?s inaugural entry in the World Baseball Classic. He spent last week touring Israel and scouting prospects and youth leagues, and on Thursday presented a jersey to President Shimon Peres.

?It?s a great life experience for him,? Padres Manager Bud Black said. ?There?s no doubt Brad wants to stay in the game. Some players would rather go into broadcasting; some players would rather go into the front office or amateur scouting. My instinct tells me Brad wants to get in uniform as either a bench coach or manager at some point.?

For Ausmus, 43, managing Team Israel is a start. Raised in Connecticut by a Jewish mother and a Protestant father, Ausmus did not go to church or synagogue as a boy but his family displayed a Christmas tree and a menorah. He said he felt most connected to his heritage through playing in the majors.

?There?s so much Jewish-American generational love of baseball that I saw,? Ausmus said. ?Boys or even grown men would come up and tell me I was their favorite player.?

These days, Milwaukee?s Ryan Braun, Texas? Ian Kinsler and Boston?s Kevin Youkilis are Jewish major league stars. Other Jewish major leaguers include Arizona?s Craig Breslow, the Mets? Ike Davis and Texas? Scott Feldman. Israel?s team will include native Israelis, but Ausmus said he also hoped to attract as many major leaguers as possible.

Israel grants citizenship to anyone with at least one Jewish grandparent, so all of those players would be eligible to play for Israel in the Classic. Ausmus said he had a comprehensive list of Jewish players in professional baseball and had reached out to them directly or through their agents.

A problem could be timing. Israel will play in a qualifying round with France, South Africa and Spain in Florida, but Ausmus said he did not know if it would take place in September or November. That makes a big difference because only minor leaguers could participate in September. The actual tournament takes place during spring training next year.

Braun and Youkilis played for the United States in the last Classic, in 2009. Davis said he would be more interested in playing for the United States, although he did not dismiss the idea of Israel?s team.

?I?ve played for a lot of U.S.A. teams already, and my goal would be to play for the highest U.S.A. team,? Davis said.

Ausmus knows at least two players who will be on his roster: the recently retired outfielders Shawn Green and Gabe Kapler have agreed to serve as player-coaches, and the former pitcher Scott Schoeneweis has shown interest in playing or coaching. Andrew Lorraine, another former major league pitcher, is the team?s pitching coach.

Baseball is a niche sport in Israel, Ausmus said, but with a good showing in the Classic, he said he hoped it could grow. For now, he said, about 1,000 people play baseball in Israel, where most fields would not be adequate for American high school teams.

?We?re not starting from scratch because they had a professional league here in 2007,? Ausmus said. ?But I think with the W.B.C. coming up, the people involved with Israeli baseball saw an opportunity, if Team Israel does well, to not only promote their country, but to also promote baseball. This is hopefully helping that. You have to start somewhere.?

UPDATE 3-Bud weakens to storm off Mexico's Pacific coast

Sat May 26, 2012 1:26am BST

* Mexico's largest Pacific port closed

* Bud brings rains, overcast skies on coast

* No major oil installations in storm's path (Changes headline, lead, updates location)

By David Alire Garcia

MANZANILLO, Mexico, May 25 (Reuters) - Hurricane Bud weakened to a tropical storm as it churned closer to Mexico's coast on Friday, but it brought heavy rains and strong winds that downed trees and closed schools and a major Pacific shipping port.

The first hurricane of the 2012 season, Bud was downgraded to a tropical storm with winds of up to 70 miles per hour (115 km per hour) on Friday afternoon. The center of the storm is expected to hit the coast between the port city of Manzanillo and the tourist town of Puerto Vallarta overnight on Friday, the U.S. National Hurricane Center said.

Downpours and wind gusts whipped through Manzanillo, knocking over trees and sending at least three families into emergency shelters.

Local officials said the municipality of Manzanillo had space for 15,000 people if more evacuations were needed.

"I am worried, but not scared. There is a lot of work to be done," Mayor Rosario Yeme said in Manzanillo, where she was coordinating with emergency services before the storm's landfall.

Authorities shut schools in Manzanillo and several other towns on the Pacific coast.

Last October, Hurricane Jova hit in almost the same area, causing at least four deaths and destroying infrastructure and houses in towns near the port.

Mexico has no significant oil installations on the Pacific coast.

"I am nervous," said 31-year-old Alma Rodriguez, who works at a clothing shop geared toward tourists in Manzanillo's commercial center. "But this is not as bad as the last storm. Everything is pretty calm," she said.

PORT CLOSED

Manzanillo port, which ships cars, cattle, metals and tequila to Asian and U.S. markets, was closed on Friday morning. The terminal handles about 9 percent of Mexico's cargo, also importing containers of manufactured goods.

Businessman Ruben Alamo expected port operations would resume by the weekend.

"The storm will affect imports and exports, but only minimally," said Alamo, who owns a construction company and represents a regional construction business association.

Bud was about 80 miles (130 km) from Manzanillo on Friday afternoon. The storm is expected to turn gradually away from the coast on Sunday, the hurricane center said.

Rainfall from Bud could soak the states of Michoacan, Colima and Jalisco and southern Nayarit with 6 to 10 inches (15 to 25 cm) forecast.

In some places, the storm could dump as much as 15 inches (38 cm) of rain, threatening life-threatening flash floods and mudslides, the center said.

Most of Mexico's oil platforms and exporting ports are in the Gulf of Mexico and affected by storms in the Atlantic, where forecasters are expecting a "near-normal" hurricane season this year with up to 15 tropical storms and four to eight hurricanes. Videos Showcase Tebowing and Salsa Dancing Celebrations in Madden NFL 13

Bro, you?re trying to sell a date to dudes who feel like they?ve been burned time and time again by this game. To them, this is a series that?s been plagued by ineptitude year in and year out, so to try to tell them that it?ll be all good and that EA will pull a complete 180 in a little over a week is a battle you CAN?T win.

Personally, I fail to understand how EA Sports could go through, what, 2 creative directors without realizing they needed more than 2 passing trajectories and proper route timing/receiver awareness and TONS of catch possibilities. Those are CORE parts of football. Even Cummings himself stated that we as consumers wouldn?t be satisfied with just fixes to legacy issues, that we need to get more for our money (GIMMICKS, basically). So for me, it?s a wait and see as well, even though Mike Young generally has to clean the mess that Cummings and Ortiz made (and it looks like he wants to head in the proper direction).

Anyway, all I?m saying is this: It?s like you?re dealing with guys here who?ve been cheated on 5-8 times by their girl, and you?re the girls? bestfriend telling them she?s finally changed and grown up. You expect them to believe and trust you?

Are laser-firing drones the weed killers of the future?

3 hrs.

Swarms of robotic drones outfitted with solid-state lasers may be tomorrow?s environmentally-friendly weed killers, according to a team of German researchers.

While this this may sound at odds with the idyll of an organic farmer toiling away in the fields, the research team says the lasers eliminate the need for toxic herbicides and labor-intensive weed control.

The drones would seek out and destroy weeds by frying their growth centers with a finely-tuned laser beam, according to scientists working on the project at Leibniz University and Laser Zentrum Hanover.

Sensors and sophisticated algorithms on board the drones would allow the robots to distinguish between weed and crop and determine the right strength of the beam required to kill the weed.

To date, the team has demonstrated the technology in the lab and greenhouse where the laser is mounted on a track over the weeds.

The next step is to deploy the technology in the field. This is tricky since the vibrations of tractor-mounted system would interfere with accuracy, leading to fried crops as well as weeds.

Hence, the idea of mounting the lasers on drones, which the team apparently thinks might be steadier.
